Are white linen trousers frumpy?

I bought a cropped pair and am now wondering if it was a mistake. Not sure what to wear them with either

Team we can chuckle (from under the paper bags we promise to hide in, obviously) when the fashion police hit 50 and discover their cool skinny jeans are the height of sad frumpydom. And when they discover you either get a bit bigger or starve to stay the same size.

Peeenut · 07/08/2012 09:02

My black ones arrived yesterday and I'm sending them back. The ones I got looked like shapeless work trousers on me, I think they were too wide for my height. Oh well back to the trousers packing dilemma.

FrameyMcFrame · 07/08/2012 09:13

I'm heading out to Primark, the black linen ones I got from there 3 years ago have lasted very well and for £7.... that's a lot of baggy arse for your money :)

^So tell us then. What are 50 year old chubby arsed women supposed to wear in summer. Or will anyone over size 8 be dismissed as frumpy?
What's stylish in hot weather for a 5'4", size 12 woman aged 50?^

a) lose weight
b) wear dresses not trousers.
c) if you must wear trousers go dark colours and tailored.

Ameliagrey · 07/08/2012 12:05

p.s.- size 12 is not overweight IMO- I thought you meant size 16+

KissMyEmbroideryHoop · 07/08/2012 12:09

It's the shapelessness combined with them being white...which is an attempt at mixing glamour with easy-to-wear-comfort.

Kind of like sequins on a tracksuit.

KissMyEmbroideryHoop · 07/08/2012 12:11

I think palazzo pants look much better on a size 12 plus as long as you're over 5.5.

If you're short and under 5.5 as well as above a size 12 then I think cropped trousers in navy are better....not baggy but fitted, with a nice sandal.

hydrangeas · 07/08/2012 14:20

I wish you would not put yourselves down so much it just adds fuel to the ones who if they were chocolate would eat themselves...(no we wouldnt we dont eat chocolate they will cry )If you like them wear them

FrameyMcFrame · 07/08/2012 16:17

'if you must wear trousers'??!!! Grin

BunnyLebowski · 07/08/2012 16:22

The only trouser I wear are pyjamas (at home) and gym bottoms (at the gym).

I never wear trousers. Not even dark tailored ones Grin.

BunnyLebowski · 07/08/2012 16:25

I meant to say trousers in my first line.

I wasn't using the uber-twattish 'fashion singular' Wink

TeamGBIWI · 07/08/2012 16:27

Why on this sacred earth would I want to wear tailored trousers when I'm on holiday?!

And WTAF is that about not wearing trousers?! Am I allowed to wear them? I'm 52, 5 ft 2 and size 10. My holiday wardrobe is now in severe jeopardy without the approval of Mumsnet. Hmm

travellingtime · 07/08/2012 16:44

OK, what about non-linen, white shorts ? knee length ?
Are they mumsy / frumpy too ?
I am certainly not a size 8...though I do take care to have a look at how HUGE my arse looks and whether the underwear is suitable before I leave the house!

racingheart · 07/08/2012 18:55

I was looking at women out and about in town yesterday. the ones I thought looked great ranged form women in cropped white linen trousers with kaftan tops to women in skinny jeans and skimpy tops. the women who looked good were all shapes and sizes. they had just made an effort.

Frumpy to me means elasticated waists, bras that quad your boobs, scuffed hems and grubby shoes. Personal taste is something entirely different from style.

And no, I won't be wearing black tailored trousers on holiday.

Ameliagrey · 07/08/2012 19:18

tailored means no elastic or drawstring waist which looks worse on larger sizes- not a 10 or 12 FGS.

Tailored could be linen with a zip fly, capri style in a darker colour, ankle skimmers in a dark colour.

My personal opinion is that larger women look better in dresses than trousers, unless they wear a top that covers the bum. And if you are short and plump, cut offs of any kind make you look shorter and dumpier.

Drywhiteplease · 07/08/2012 20:34

Well.......I really love linen trousers. I think the op asked about cropped white linen trousers, which are not flattering.
I am 5ft 3 size 10 and wear them, as advised by another poster, with fitted tops. I wear them with Havianas, converse or flat sandals. I feel really thin and cool (temperature wise) in them.dont care if they are in or out, I know it's a look that works for me.
