Mother of the Bride - eight weeks to go and no outfit!

Here's hoping you lovely Mumsnetters can advise. I need an outfit for my daughter's wedding. I've been looking on line, but I just get more confused and depressed by it all. In my blacker moments I have even considered that I might not be able to find anything and won't be able to go.

The other thing is I need some wow factor because I have to face my XP for only the second time in seven years, so I've got to look good.

I am 56, 5'4" and weigh 11 stone, so size 14/16. The legs are still OK but I am bizarrely top heavy and have to take this into account. The tops of my arms are not good and I have psoriasis on one elbow, so sleeveless is out.

I am also hopeless at choosing clothes and matching colours, so usually wear black - safe. DH says that I dress like an old lady and hates anything floral, which cuts out a lot of the Jacques Vert range in one fell swoop. He'd like to see me in a shorter, rather than a longer, skirt and obviously something other than black.

I have a reasonable budget and will pay more for the right outfit. I am not keen on buying on line, but will travel to look at anything really promising.

Is there anything you fashion gurus can do to help?

Thanks in advance.

D

How formal a wedding is it? Will you be wanting suit/hat or just a nice dress?

This looks like it would suit your shape and covers upper arms and has a button neck (I think if you are top heavy you don't want to totally cover your chest with one shade so it looks like a shelf...) and it has a lot of black in it whilst still being patterned but I'm concerned it might be too casual.

Have you had a look at Condici?

Website

Are you near a John Lewis or a big dept store because I'd really recommend you go and see a personal shopper.

Hobbs also very good for smart occasion wear will have a look for some links.

RockinD · 19/07/2012 21:36

It's going to be quite formal, but I don't see me going quite as far as a hat! I've never worn one - ever.

I'm sorry - I think the Hobbs dress is too dark and too casual. The dress and jacket idea looks promising if the sleeves were a little longer. I'm OK with a jacket, but am at that age where I tend to feel the heat a bit Wink so I would need to take the jacket off at some point.

No personal shoppers in the immediate area I'm afraid. I have asked before for important occasions, but have ended up muddling through on my own, with fairly disastrous results.

I'll go back and look at what else Hobbs have. Condici was where I started. It all looks over elaborate to me and I end up feeling I am not tall enough or thin enough.

Problem is that its just dregs of the sales at the moment and new season is only just starting to come into the shops.

Have you looked at John Lewis online - their delivery is quick and free if you're not near a store.

VerityBrulee · 19/07/2012 21:44

I have beautiful dress for you, it is so lovely and in the sale. here in stock in a 14, and here is the jacket to go with it, also in stock in 14. I have seen them in RL and they are gorgeous.

Puffykins · 19/07/2012 21:47

Go somewhere REALLY expensive - think Armani, perhaps - and figure out what you look best in. Then have something very similar made up by a dressmaker, so that it fits you perfectly.

Bearcrumble · 19/07/2012 22:08

OK how about this flowery dress in either black or white and this sheer sleeved cover up thingy

Milliways · 19/07/2012 22:26

How about this one that is mid length, floaty but not floral and has a jacket available?

I love this thread, thanks, as I too need a outfit for my DDs wedding, but I have a few months yet.

RockinD · 20/07/2012 09:43

Verity that dress is lovely, but sleeveless and out of stock. I can't see the jacket - the link takes me back to the dress again.

Always concerned that a big flowery print will make me look like a sofa?

A jacket would have to be a proper jacket. Anything short, or a shrug type style doesn't work because of the boobs.

Going to have a look round another town today and will see what I come up with.

Thanks all.

Sorry RockinD here is the jacket.

The dress seems to be still in stock in 42(14) and 44 (16) here

They look very elegant worn together
