Teeth whitening - recommendations

Apols if this has been done to death, but I really want some advice about teeth whitening.

I didn't realise my teeth were so yellow until I saw photo of my big toothy grin on facebook yesterday and I was really shocked!! So, what do people recommend for getting teeth nice and white?

That's it really - please help me get my pearly whites back!

Had mine done at dentist's with trays and gel.

They make the moulds for the trays and you use the gel at home. I didn't leave it on overnight- just 2 hrs a day for about 10 days.

My dentist does not recommend Zoom laser- too harsh.

Don't fiddle about yourelf with anything off the web- it may not be genuine and you should have your teeth and gums checked out before using anything to bleach your teeth.

I paid £400 but that was high- other dentists might charge around £200.

I'm using Crest whitening strips and they seem to be working ok for me.
Cost £35 for a 28 day treatment.

damppatchnot · 15/07/2012 19:13

I had mine done this week with gel and am delighted with results. I live in Lancashire and can highly recommend the service

monkeyspiss · 15/07/2012 19:14

as a cheapy option, crest white strips work really well

doinmummy · 15/07/2012 19:17

I would love to have mine done professionally but as I drink loads of tea I was worried it might not last. So I will stick with the Crest system as it works and I can do it again.

shinyblackgrape · 15/07/2012 19:19

DH a dentist - does ours with trays and gel.

I haven't done topped mine up for about 8 months as pregnant and just don't want to - PFB Grin mine still lok pretty good though due to good brushing technique - preen. Also probably the lack of red wine and tea too.

He's the same as the dentist above. Does not recommend zoom at all.

Shh2012 · 15/07/2012 19:25

I did it through my dentist with trays and gel. That was about 6 years ago. It cost about £300. My dentist does not recommend Zoom either.
I did it overnight for 10 days - first 5 days I did the top row of teeth, second 5 days the lower set. It looked great, even though I drink lots of tea and some red wine, for about 3 years. Then I simply bought more of the gel from the dentist and same process again.
They need a top up now so I'll take my trays in to my dentist at my check up and he'll make sure they still fit, then I'll get more gel again. The gel costs around £40 if I remember rightly.

Yes, I've heard of Crest strips - are those the ones that you have to get from the US? Are they safe? and safe while breastfeeding?

The gel treatment at the dentist sounds awesome - think I might have to start saving though! Again, is it safe to do while bf'ing?

Thanks so much for fab replies.

I dont know about using them while breast feeding but i have extremely sensitive teeth and I have felt no pain !!

shinyblackgrape · 15/07/2012 20:27

DH has a patient who has damaged her gums with the crest strips. Apparently she had to use them loads to get a decent result and they've done something to her gums. Can ask what it was but I think he would say they're not very good

Speaking of damaged gums, he's also seen a few people who have had their teeth bleached at stalls in shopping centres and ended up with horrific sensitivity and burned gums from too much very strong gel.

HelenofSparta · 15/07/2012 20:39

Hello, had mine done for my wedding 5 yrs ago and still have th trays, but no gel - does anyone know what gel to buy/whether can order online? Thanks

Giggle78 · 15/07/2012 20:40

Hi,

I did crest whitestrips five years ago. Then about three years ago I did the proper stuff from the dentist. I preferred the crest whitestrips and so am currently using them in the run up to my birthday. I got mine off ebay. I also only use them every other day because they make my teeth a bit sensitive.

Dollydowser · 15/07/2012 20:54

I did trays and gel too from my dentist, cost £250 3 years ago. I am very happy with the result, get loads of compliments even now. I top up once or twice a year over three or four nights.

wheresthecake · 15/07/2012 21:05

dampatchnot whereabouts in Lancashire if you don't mind me asking? That's where I'm from and have been contemplating this for a while..

damppatchnot · 15/07/2012 21:13

I live in kearsley Bolton I had three gel applications 15 mins each for £40 and my teeth went from shade 18 to 8

V pleased

ameliagrey · 16/07/2012 12:06

damp- can you explain what you had done? How can they do it for £40?

Did you have custom made moulds? Was this at a dentist's or a beautician type salon? What strength gel was used to get such a s huge result on 45 minutes?

The thing about Crest strips is- how do you know what strength the bleach is? How do you know your teeth and gums will be safe?

Also- how do they whiten the sides and back of your teeth- they can't surely? And if you teeth overlap in any way, how can they lie flat against the tooth?

The thing is, it's tempting to go for cheapest option, but you really need a dentist to check your teeth and gums first. Using custom made trays, you get the gel right round the tooth- not just across the front with strips.

The dentist will decide which strength gel you need. Also, sometimes it does sauce sensitivity and they will give you another product to use for this. if the bleach is too strong it can damage your enamel. Only your dentist can advise on what is best for your teeth.

ameliagrey · 16/07/2012 12:07

sauce- cause !

Dollydowser · 16/07/2012 14:39

The dentist gave me 10% peroxide gel. I could only get them so white with that,

I then bought some 16% which gave me better results in a shorter time. Just had a quick look on Ebay, they go up to 36%!

Chinateacup · 16/07/2012 14:44

Crest whitestrips. I got mine from eBay too.

damppatchnot · 16/07/2012 23:06
