Eyeshadow help - a clueless 48 year old !!!

GherkinGobbler · 24/06/2012 21:14

Could anyone recommend any semi-matte or satin type eyeshadow please.

Basically I'm 48 and would like to occasionally wear eyeshadow during the day, but I seem only to be able to find either sparkly or matte eyeshadow - I think something with a bit of "shine" BUT saying that not too much !! Smile would help "lift" my eyes. I'm finding that as I get older I seem to be more piggy eyed (sounds attractive !).

I've got medium skin colouring (yellow toned, I think!), blue eyes and brown (medium ash brown is what is says on the box!) hair, so if anyone could recommend what colour I should be getting as well I'd be really really grateful. I thought I'd just get one colour to sweep on the eyelid - or should I be getting a couple of colours - one for the lid and one for putting somewhere else (crumbs, this beauty stuff is technical !!).

I know I should know these things, but, I don't Smile

I typed a massive post and my phone ate it!
I usually sweep a nude colour up to my brow to lift and even out a bit then other colours elsewhere
I bought this today (link below) and honestly think it fits your description and would make blue eyes look amazing, but can also recommend MAC Woodwinked

Mosey over to a Laura Mercier counter, some of their shadows have a very subtle gleam. I have one called sandstone that's a very flattering peachy-nude.

MAC do a satin finish too, I have one called Grain that's lovely, another nude!! A wheat-y kind of shade. They should be able to help you select some at either counter.

And because I'm bored and make up addicted, here is MAC Woodwinked. I'm kinda presuming you want neutrals, bronzes look incredible with blue eyes especially sort of orangey/copper based ones

Patina is another good mac one, it's a gold/grey/bronze kind of shade.

germyrabbit · 24/06/2012 21:26

i really like nars ponderosa atm, my eyes are 'piggy' and brown too.

then i put on a bronzey powder shadow in the corners. it seems to work and the ponderosa makes the shadow stay in place

also love laura mercier african violet for the day though this is a bit sparkly but lovely

GherkinGobbler · 24/06/2012 21:48

Wow ! thank you for the quick replies.

Bright the Maybelline one looks lovely, I'm going to get that tomorrow and give it a whirl for £4.99 I can't go wrong! Would I use this one alone or do I need another colour, as well ? (I told you I was useless) The MAC one looks really good too, but I'd need to venture into the big city (Cheltenham, actually !) to have a look it in real life.

Yes, it is neutrals that I'm looking for, I'm hoping that they look good even if you don't know how to put them on properly Smile

Iate Is the Laura Mercier one very light? would it be OK just by itself, do you think? I like the MAC one too, I'll make a note of these and have a shopping day, I might even brave the makeup counters (the ladies always frighten me, what a wimp!).

Thanks, keep 'um rolling in Smile

Have a look at Urban Decay's Naked palette. There are two and I've got the first one - it has a good mixture of matt and shine and they can be layered until you get a look you're happy with. It's brilliant.

brighthair · 24/06/2012 21:59

I can't see why you couldn't use it alone, although they do a nude one that would look good with it that you could use all over, then use the bronze up to the crease. It also works as a liner and smudged under your eye

GherkinGobbler · 24/06/2012 21:59

Crumbs, MAC stockists are hard to find - I'll have to go into Birmingham. Would you say the online swatches are accurate? I might just order some online.

Germy sorry, my eyes are blue, would ponderosa still be OK? Showing my age here, when you mentioned ponderosa I immediately thought of the "High Chapperell".

I would say the online swatches are pretty good. If you google MAC (whatever colour) swatch review bloggers often show them wearing it as well

brighthair · 24/06/2012 22:04

MAC Coppering if you want a bit more wild Wink
MAC Satin Taupe is nice too
MAC sumptuous Olive is a subtle green/gold that I wear a lot

Actually itching to do your make up now GrinBlush

GherkinGobbler · 24/06/2012 22:17

Bright thanks for all these suggestions, I'm going to write all these down and have a good look at them and then do some online ordering (yeeeeahh).
I'd love you to make me over - I really need taking in hand. My 13yr DD knows more about these things than me ! although I've got to say S & B is great it gives me so many ideas - I could just do with a bigger bank balance, though Grin

Don't be swayed by DD Grin
Mum once asked me if she needed her makeup updating, I said "yes, it looks shit" and we went to Selfridges. Now you can't move her off the MAC counter, she thinks nothing of spending £100 on new makeup. I created a monster Blush

GherkinGobbler · 24/06/2012 22:23

You could be creating another one here, as well Smile

I can second Urban, I didn't wear any make up until I returned to work last year and now I'm obsessd Blush

I use bare minerals for everything bar eye shadow and the urban can be used as eye liner as well.
