Converse, true to size?

I'm a 4.5 normally and not sure whether to go for a 4 or a 5?

I think they are. I'm a large 6 and bought a 6 and they are really comfy

Yes I'd say they are. I'm a7 and bought a 7, same with Vans.

I'm a wide 5 and I found the length perfect, but slightly tight on the sides which I'm hoping will go with a bit of wear.

Do you mean the canvas all stars or a different style? The all stars size a bit big - the sales assistant told me she always buys a size smaller, I'm a 6.5 and the 6 is quite roomy at the toes still. The leather ones size normal

Yes, I would say you'd be better off with a 4. I'm a smallish 7 and have always worn a 6 in All Stars. :)
