Bra Strategies

So how many bras is the right number? I've got 3 (decent but aging) in white, red and black, plus one sports and one strictly for emergencies only. I'm realising this is too few (have been putting off getting re-equipped as hoping to get pregnant). But good, well-fitted bras are really expensive so I tend to have the minimum and then wear them out really fast with all the washing. Or save them for best and wear the emergency one.

Wondering what others do?

Buy what I find pretty when I can get them cheaply. I have loads a few

KirstenDunce · 22/06/2012 23:22

When we were short of money a while back I had two, black and white and that wasn't enough. I now have five that fit well in black, white and nude and then two or three others that don't fit very well at all but can be worn if I really need to.

I am planning on buying a few more, now money isn't as tight I think I'm going to get one or two nice bras, rather than plain, functional and cheap. Its been a while since I've had a pretty bra.

Krumbum · 23/06/2012 00:09

I've got 5. It's hard to get them in my size though (at least for under £40) but I'd love more, I'm constantly searching for one that is actually comfortable.

I think I went down to 3 when I discovered Bravissimo and that I had a waist when norks were correctly packaged, so spent more/bra on fewer bras. But today I wore one for the 3rd day in a row due to laundry mismanagement/work trip and really shouldn't have (arms clamped to sides all day). Think I might join the 5 bra club...

I have ...um...a drawer full of them, no idea how many. No white ones though. Several nudes, different models, several blacks, all possible colours, strapless, several sports bras as well that I wear depending on activity and clothes.

As I have that many and can rotate them, they also last for ages.

ForwardOcho · 23/06/2012 08:17

Assuming that you are wearing your bras to hold up your norks and not flash pretty straps, then you need nude, seam free. Maybe a couple of different neckline shapes - balconette, plunge/push up, and a strapless one. 5 is about right They all lose their elasticity and therefore their support after 6 months or so, so you'd be better off having 3 bras and rotating them for a year or two, then chucking them out and starting again. The other two might be special occasion ones which will obs last longer.

The debenhams sales are great for grabbing a bargain and getting a decent bra for 1/3 of the usual price.

kensingtonkat · 23/06/2012 08:27

I have massive boobs so bras are a necessary expense.

I have six everyday seamless bras - three nude, three black, so I have one on, one in the wash, and one spare in case I don't have time to do laundry that day. I never bother with white bras - flesh ones look much better under white t-shirts and tops.

Then two sports bras which are washed between wears.

Then two coloured balconette bras worn solely for the purposes of seduction Grin.

My size means that my bras tend to cost upwards of £30 each; I manage the cost (and the fluctuating size factor) by getting measured every other month, and then throwing out the oldest bra and replacing it with a new one.

Born2BRiiiled · 23/06/2012 08:34

Not sure how many, but I just bought an Asda t-shirt one in nude (the slightly padded) for 4 quid. I just grabbed my normal size without trying on. It's great! I'm large too, so I'm impressed.

Born2BRiiiled · 23/06/2012 08:35

Also don't have white bras. No real point.

MoJangled · 23/06/2012 14:19

Clear that I'm a serious bra beginner - always default to white and no system. Liking your approach KensingtonKat, think a shopping spree is in the offing...

Primark do some lovely bras for not a lot of money, as do brastop. I have about 20 of the things and am about to add to the collection, given all the talk on here recently about them and the recommendations!

ifancyashandy · 23/06/2012 16:50

I have about 30 I guess. White nude, cream, black and then all the colours of the rainbow! Balconette, plunge, sports, strapless, t-shirt, lace, bedroom Grin.

I really like Simone Perele bras Issimm. I'm not small (30E) but her's come in all sizes. Get them on Figleaves. Or try Mimi Holiday - gorgeous bras.
