Is it possible to cover grey hair if you're blonde?

I have blonde highlights at the hairdressers but over the last few years it's really not been covering the grey at the sides. I don't really want to have an all-over base colour followed by highlights on top as some do (cost & time) but is that the only way to cover the grey?

Sorry to say that it's the only way I found to cover mine and I am much happier for it too. Expensive though....

I have a base colour round the bottom, highlights on the top, and then she does the bits in between the highlights with the base colour too. It works out a bit cheaper than all over highlights, which is what I had before.
