I love this dress but I know it won't suit me - anyone seen something similar?

OK so I do love a bit of retro chic and swishy skirts and I am in love with this lovely dress - however, high necklines do NOT suit me.

Has anyone seen anything similar with a different neckline? I particularly love the fact that the top is different to the skirt but I don't know what that's called to google it!

Long shot I know... Grin

Shockingly I think I found it!

AngryFeet · 15/06/2012 23:53

I wonder if you could just buy it and have the neckline changed by a seamstress? Presumably you could send it back if they look at it and say it can't be done?

AngryFeet · 15/06/2012 23:55

Not really the same but top and bottom are different. I tried it on last week and it is very flattering. Looks much better on than it does on that model.

Ooh replies! I like both of those but not quite as lovely I'm afraid!

I could get it altered but it's not cheap and I'd be scared!

try www.modcloth.com so so many swishy retro dresses! this one in particular is of a similar style: www.modcloth.com/shop/dresses/grad-party-dress

alternatively find a swishy skirt ( m-uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_6,mon_6.7/1130366308 ) and team with a stripy vest top.

you have good taste, that dress is scrumptious.

IHeartKingThistle · 16/06/2012 11:04

Oh you should NOT have shown me that site! Grin

oops! it is a bit dangrous isn't it :D

Clure · 16/06/2012 13:10

h&m

IHeartKingThistle · 16/06/2012 14:05

That's really nice Clure - I could definitely work with that! It says knee length but looks like a mini on the model - I wonder what length it would be?

OP posts:
Clure · 16/06/2012 20:36

IHeartkingthistle - those models are ten foot tall so on us ordinary bods the frocks would probably be around knee length!

I wish, Clure. It is really hard for me to find knee-length dresses that I actually like. And I am only 5'8"Angry

IHeartKingThistle · 16/06/2012 20:57

I'm 5 9 and my knees are not good - I feel your pain!

OP posts:
bigTillyMint · 16/06/2012 20:58

Yes, it's my rugby-players knees that need to be covered up these days!

Clure · 16/06/2012 23:11

ah now I have the opposite problem being 5'1 most things swamp me but things that are mid thigh usually fit nicely as knee length!

ceeveebee · 17/06/2012 21:19

There is a lovely dress from Oasis in the Style section of the sunday times but I can't find on their website yet. V neck, mainly peach colour with a mint green panel on top half, with a pleated skirt, £65. Might be shorter than you want though. Bit like this one but different colours:

IHeartKingThistle · 18/06/2012 19:49

That is really pretty - yep, a bit short though! Aagh and I need a dress for Friday!

Thanks for all the replies btw, really appreciated!

I saw that Oasis dress too yesterday and it is gorgeous.
I feel your pain about high necklines at the moment OP!

ceeveebee · 18/06/2012 22:01

Right, I know this is M&S but it looks quite nice. Not contrasting but has the right length pleated skirt. perhaps with a contrasting belt it might look more 50's?

ceeveebee · 18/06/2012 22:02

Actually the neckline is probably too high for you

StellaAndFries · 18/06/2012 22:11

Oh I think I'm in love with that ModCloth page, the Bettie Page dresses are calling to me!

IHeartKingThistle · 18/06/2012 22:34

ceeveebee I saw that one last night and it is lovely but do you think those sleeves are a bit odd?

OP posts:
ceeveebee · 18/06/2012 22:40

Hmm, maybe a bit. M&S never get it quite right do they?
I saw another nice one on Debenhams in pink or green, on sale too:

(ps I am on a self imposed ban on shopping as have been buying far too many things recently, so am killing time shopping vicariously for other people!)
