I have just rediscovered this topic having had it hidden for many years due to not needing it! Except now I think I do need it Grin long story short, I've never worn make up or had any kind of beauty regime except for plucking my eyebrows when I remember.

Lately I've been feeling very dowdy and boring (I'm 23 this year!) and I suppose I'd just like to know where to start. I want to feel like I look good but I couldn't go from nothing to wearing a full face of make up because I think that would be really noticeable and I'd feel silly.

So would you mind sharing with me what you think the basics are in terms of wearing a little make up/moisturising (do you need to do that?) and maybe give me some tips or point me in the right direction regarding how to choose what looks good and apply it properly?

Go and book a make up lesson at a make up counter. A good one will listen to you and advise accordingly. Try a few different brands and see what you think. I like Bobbi brown, I'm sure others will recommend some different ones too.

Try watching some of the youtube beauty gurus who have videos explaining different products and how to wear them, such as Makeupgeek, Lisa Eldridge or look at Sali Hughes on the Guardian.

What is your skin like - dry or oily? clear or do you get blemishes?

I would say start with a good cleansing and moisturising regime first of all. In my opinion yes you do need to moisturise! If you feel it's a bit much to jump to a full face of makeup, maybe try a light tinted moisturiser instead of foundation? A bit of natural blusher and some lipgloss?

Thanks for the tip about the make up counter chaos.

Erm, I'm not quite sure what my skin type is. I don't really get many spots anymore really just the odd one (unless you count blackheads around my chin, nose and forehead). It doesn't feel dry though.

Researching moisturisers now Grin and can you get non-sticky lip gloss or is that just the way it is?

thanks for the advice x

Hey, I am not really a make up fan... I use nivea moisturiser. For make up I use a bronzer or blusher to give cheeks a little colour, Touche eclat concealer if I am tired under eyes and mascara to give me eyelashes as mine are too fair to be seen. I hate foundation all over my face so never wear it. You can get non sticky gloss I like chanel ones... Expensive but last for ages. X
