Does anyone else keep trying things they know just don't suit them?

I keep trying on blazers and coloured jeans in shops even though I know they make me look like a heffalump- I must be some kind of masochist!

Today I wore mac studiofix foundation to work from the sample pots I have even though it looks like shite on me!

When will I learn?

Every year I try cropped trousers and every year I decide that I look like a pillock in them.

MarshaBrady · 12/06/2012 19:19

I have scarves. Printed silk/cashmere or cotton type. I always feel constricted and too done and take them off after 5 mins.

I'm sure there is the right one out there. An oversized one perhaps.

I keep trying Zara dresses on, even though nearly every single time the proportions are completely wrong on me. I am tall and the waist ends up sitting too high up (am sure Kate Middleton has them radically altered as I am the same height as her.) They just look so pretty on the hangers though! The trouble is that last time I went through the ritual (knowing I was doomed to failure) I actually found two that fitted and I liked. So I bought one. This will mean I try again, but doubtless that shock result was a one off....

yes, i am always getting sucked in by gorgeous people on websites , in my head i can look like them and have some idyllic lifestyle e.g bought a dress from hush which was nice , then got carried away and ordered 4 more things none of which are 'me' and had to pay £9 to send it all back.

WipsGlitter · 12/06/2012 20:07

Jewellery in general. I feel "conspicuous" wearing it.

Ditto coloured jeans and skinny ones.

LittlePandaBear · 12/06/2012 20:11

I keep ordering shoes online and they never fit when they arrive as I'm between sizes. It's a lot more effort to order them and send them back than it is to actually go to the shop and try them on!

Also, I'll buy something cheap because it's cheap, but then don't like wearing it because it's cheap.

Iatemyskinnyperson · 12/06/2012 20:19

Those Kimono jacket things. I ADORE them, try on every single one I find, and without fail they are shocking on me, looks like my boobs continue all the way down my arms.

AuntieMaggie · 12/06/2012 20:24

Glad I'm not the only one.

The foundation today was a hideous mistake - it just sat on top of my skin giving me an orange tint! I don't know why I'm so intent to make that foundation suit my skin!

thriftychic i think you've hit the nail on the head there - its all those damn good looking ones that fool me into thinking that it'll suit me this time!

Yes Yes Yes maxi dresses and biker jackets, look amazing on other people and dreadful on me. Yet I keep buying them when really i should just buy what I know suits me.

Or I buy something similar to what I already have and then never wear because it will never live up the the original.

piratecat · 12/06/2012 20:29

white linen trews. despite having lost weight they look crap. i am too short for them. people say oh you need to find the right ones, the right shape, fit.
nope, but i still try!!

ilovegreenbeans · 12/06/2012 21:05

plain t-shirts. And vests. I'm a bit too straight up and down and they always cling in the wrong spots. Tunics, dresses, something with shape is much better, yet every "summer" I'm in the shops trying on tshirts and vests....

lololizzy · 13/06/2012 00:15

yes, because sometimes I am pleasantly surprised. Something that screams NO! on the hanger can work, because of the cut / size / fabric etc. Easier since I've starting working in a charity shop as i can try on after hours, alone! Just to get ideas, and get me out of my comfort zone.

ceeveebee · 13/06/2012 00:25

Yep, skinny jeans in pastel colours. I keep ordering them online, trying them on and sending them back. Really I should order the next size up but refuse to accept this.

whitelillies · 13/06/2012 04:21

Yes - Zara dresses - exact same a poster who said the waist ends at up at my sternum- Gah !
When will I learn that converse are just not comfy for me and give me backache ?
Oh and blazer jackets - love them ,have one that looks fabulous it a very structured one but keep trying all the slouchy fabbo Zara/ oasis/ Topshop ones that look axing on the models but minging on me - think bad 80 s men suit that s wrong cut n shape look . Still though I keep trying ....

Cydonia · 13/06/2012 07:35

I'm with you on the t-shirts and vests greenbeans. Wish I could just throw on a t-shirt and jeans or vest top and skirt and look good like normal people! Stupid apple shape, and will be even worse this summer as just had a baby.

anniewoo · 13/06/2012 08:53

Birkenstocks- they just don't suit my feet ( wrong shape) yet i always try them on in shops Confused and foundation - looks too heavy on me.

Pinkglow · 13/06/2012 08:59

Maxi dresses. I known they make me look six months pregnant yet I still try them om hoping Ill find the exception!

dresses in general make my hips look huge, I'm fairly slim but the way Im built really doesnt seem to suit dresses that go in at the waist
