Help with smart business dress desperately needed

Cross posted from chat...I have a job interview specifying smart business dress. What does this mean to you? Do I need to go out and buy a suit or could I get away with a smart dress? I really want this job and it's very competitive. I have smart bits but nothing particularly polished imho although can look very smart. What would you wear??

What about a smart dress you can use again, and an existing jacket if chills

I swear by COS for my work clothes

Smart business dress definitely means a suit ime. My work dress code is "smart business attire" and it's suits all the way. I agree you could get away with a dress as long as you wear a matching (probably plain) jacket and don't go mad with your accessories though. Keep away from florals.

I would either wear a suit in a dark colour with a blouse/shirt, or a shift dress with matching jacket, knee length in either case. Probably avoid trousers even trouser suits.

Is it an interview or assessment centre? Former I'd wear a suit but when I had to do an assessment centre I wore a smart dress as I wanted to be comfortable and it was going to be all day.

Shift dress and matching jacket should be fine
