Gap sizing: FFS!

Just a rant really.

I ordered a light stripy jumper and a short-sleeved navy one from Gap; size small for the stripy one and extra-small for the navy one.

They've arrived today and the stripy one is too short in the sleeves and about a size and a half too wide/big in the body. The navy is obviously short-sleeved so no problems there, but is seriously VAST around my torso. It's like a knitted poncho.

I know I'm quite slight (small ? 34B ? bongoes and 26" waist and a narrow ribcage and torso), with annoyingly long arms (24" ? yes, have just measured them Grin) but a) I ordered small sizes and b) my size and shape isn't THAT freakishly unusual, is it? I don't look at other women in the street and think 'Gosh, she's got short stubby arms/a massively wide torso/gigantic norks'. Who do these clothes fit?!?! Do they fit you?

Rant over. But Christ, it's irritating. I was looking forward to a couple of new jumpers.

GAP sizes tend to be big indeed. What I really hate is the inconsistent sizing within the brand though, where one item is massive and the other in same size tiny - couldn't they at least decide if they want to do vanity sizing or not and stick to it?
But can I just ask that if you are extra small with 26 inch waist and narrow ribcage, are you sure you need a 34 bra? Have you measured yourself recently?

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 11/06/2012 14:49

I think the inconsistent sizing within a brand is down to the company using different factories to make some of the same items.

I know my bra size seems a bit weird. I haven't measured myself for ages, no, but all my bras are 34B and they all fit ? some on the smallest hook, but not all of them. I've tried 32 bras before and they squish my norks a bit.

I have quite broad shoulders and upper back, it's just that I seem to have a 'hollow' mid and lower back (as a dressmaker once said to me), and a small waist.

@ "bongoes" :o

HazleNutt · 11/06/2012 15:06

it's not the band that would squish though, but too small cup. (I wear 32 bra and am sadly nowhere near XS and 26 inch waist)

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 11/06/2012 15:12

All my en-dashes have come out as question marks. Hmm How annoying.

Pinot, glad I amused you Grin.

Hazel, so should I try a C cup? Or a smaller band? Or both? (I'm hopeless about bras.) Anyway, the point remains that my new stuff doesn't fecking fit me and I didn't think I was THAT much of a freak Sad.

There is a partciular style at the moment that is very popular, has a big wide short (sometimes cropped) body and short slim arms (ike a child's drawing of a person) - are you sure you didn't get one of these? Can you link?

HazleNutt · 11/06/2012 15:22

Lady, do you have a tape measure? Can you check your under- and overbust measurements, then I can recommedn what size to start with. I would guess that yes, both smaller band and bigger cup.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 11/06/2012 15:30

OK, I am definitely more like 32 round the 'fullest part' as they say, and 28 immediately under them.

breaktime, here they are: Huge-o-rama

could get me in it twice over

The first one is supposed to be a 'relaxed' fit, I realise. And it is a slightly sporty shape e.g. fitted waistband and a shortish boxy shape. But honestly, around the bust and chest it's ginormous! And the other one is, well, just weirdly shaped. Or I am ...

I would try 28D bra then - this is just approximate though, depends on the brand and even model, but yes, smaller band - bigger cup.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 11/06/2012 18:01

Cripes. That sounds like a weird size will I ever find one in TK Maxx?
Thanks though!

Gap sizing drives me mad too.

I was SO hopeful I might finally find some jeans to fit me after I found their 'curvy' range. I've got huge hips and bum, but small waist and ribcage so finding clothes, esp jeans is a nightmare!

But alas, the first size I tried barely went over my thighs and the next size up was enourmous round my waist.

And just to be completely inconsistent, I had to go another size bigger again to fit into a pair of smart trousers from the curvy range.

Make your minds up Gap!

cakeoholic · 11/06/2012 20:04

Hi, I find the exact same with gap knitwear and some other tops but their jeans are perfect for me.

We sound a similar size, I am a 28D which is a weird size though John Lewis do some, mainly in their own ranges. I also find a Calvin Klein 30C does fit well too which you can sometimes find in TK Maxx!

breaktime · 11/06/2012 22:01

mm I've got that stripy top in a small and it looked OK on me - but I'm a fattish size 10 with short arms - maybe that's why! I like things to be loose around my podgy tum....

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 12/06/2012 09:26

cake, that's good to hear!

break, yes, I think we're just different shapes. I like tops to be quite relaxed in fit e.g. not tight, but honestly, you could practically fit another me in it next to me! And the sleeves are too short and that bugs me.
