Best face creams, perimenopausal, nearly 50 and skin feeling really dry

I wondered what people would recommend as the very best face creams for the more maturing skin? I always had combination skin but as I head into the menopause it's getting really dry all over and crinkling is visible in the sunlight. I don't have a lot of deep wrinkles but its the dry feeling and the general fine crinkliness that is bothering me!

I have been using Neals Yard anti ageing Frankinsense cream for 8 years, I am 48, its wonderful.

Hepsibaaah · 11/06/2012 19:09

I had the same problem. 51, perimeno, combo skin turned v dry. Solved it with drinking 2 litres fluid a day, regular exfoliation (use St Ives apricot scrub) maybe 3 times a week, then Clarins Hyrdaquench Rich cream, and the Bi-Phase Hydraquench intensive serum under that on the days I exfoliate.

Made a huge difference to my skin, so much better with wrinkles noticably improved.

robotCS · 11/06/2012 19:14

neal's yard is very good, as is decleor excellence
there was a sample of this in may amyra beauty box last month - it's excellent and I'll be buying a bottle when I get paid next!
(have a £10 code of £30 for amyra if anyone wants it)

You need to add an oil - for convenience you can just use the roll on superskin concentrate by Liz Earle under your normal moisturiser.

You can use it at night too but I favour Decleor Aromessence for
night as it's one you melt in your palms and is incredibly relaxing to press on your face - I use that without moisturiser at night but if you need it richer just moisturise over the top.

I buy them from Qvc as if they dont suit after a week or two of use I can send them back [www.qvcuk.com] Smile

I have sandpaper like skin. It's dry dry dry and then a bit dryer.

I use A'kin products. A'kin the Rose toner and cleanser followed by rosehip oil and the rosehip moisture. In the day I use the hydrating mist.

They have a Cellular Radiance Serum which is lovely too.

Thanks for all the suggestions, am still pondering (can't afford to buy them all!). The idea of an oil sounds good, has anyone tried the Waitrose Bottom Butter that caused such a stir on Mumsnet a few years ago (it is basically olive oil). Or Bio-oil?

BOttom Butter is lovely, I don't like Bio Oil much, find it stings me.

I have just ordered some rose hip seed oil from Amazon apparently it's the main ingredient in Liz Earle superskin which is expensive - the stuff I ordered was a fiver - I have only tried it on my hand so far but feels lovely. I am going to mix a bit with my Aveeno cream.

theDudesmummy · 12/06/2012 16:11

Well for start I have ordered some rose hip oil, the apricot scrub and some Bottom Butter. I have so many different (expensive-ish, half-used) moisturisers in my bathroom that I think before I go buying new expensive ones I will try adding the bottom butter at night and also mixing the rose hip oil with some of the other creams. I have however noted all the suggestions of other creams!

Bottom butter is lovely stuff, I am like you VERY flakey and peri menopausal -am dreading the actual menopause Sad

robotCS · 12/06/2012 16:53

don't like bio oil at all -it made my skin feel really weird
bottom butter is okay but not enough ooomph for a menopausal skin!
elemis pro collagen marine cream is another lovely one- QVC do good deals and have a TSV coming up soon I think.

51wksApart · 12/06/2012 17:08

Bottom butter is lovely. I mix it with my rosehip oil at night and then just use rosehip oil in the morning. Bio-oil also stings my face (but is fine on the rest of me).

Try Eucarin's new anti-ageing cream with Hyaluronic Acid. £25 from Boots. Not cheap but has made a massive difference to my skin. It smells Devine too! Reminds me of something from when I was little.....

Anyway, they do a day cream, night cream and eye cream with SPF15.

valiumredhead · 13/06/2012 07:55

Rosehip oil mixed with a bit of face cream is utterly fantastic - my skin is amazing this morning and not a flake in sight!

theDudesmummy · 13/06/2012 08:11

Well I am going to try that frst. I have several pots of various Olay and L'oreal face creams, which I will add the oil to when it arrives. When all that cream is finished I will try some of the other suggestions on here.

I'd recommend:
CLINIQUE- either super defence or youth surge- both come in formulations for dry skin.
REN- Omega 3 serum, and frankisence cream.

Ditto the advice that your skin may need hydrating with water- so drink more and cut back on caffiene and alcohol.

Sugar has been shown by dermos to be the biggest skin ager of all- so cut it out.

Other dietary changes- you need omega 3- in oily fish. eating salmon or sardines 3 x a week will help, along with whole almonds and walnuts.

Iatemyskinnyperson · 13/06/2012 09:17

Alice- very interested in yr comment re sugar. I've gone low-carb lately (so no sugar) and my skin is a lot less dry. Also, my periods came back!!

Before that my fav moisturiser was Bioderma Hydrabio riche (eBay £12) or Vichy Aqualia Antiox. (£17)

Decleor Rose oil is excellent too. Also heled with redness/sensitivity.

CockBollocks · 13/06/2012 10:34

I bought this recently as I am really suffering with flaky skin, i'm trying to use the OCM method so didnt want anything too harsh.

organic surge

It is lovely and I am very impressed.

CockBollocks · 13/06/2012 10:40

link didnt work!!

organic surge

Can also 2nd rosehip oil.

ZZMum · 13/06/2012 18:02

Totally agree re the water - I just done 28 days of detox and gave up caffeinne and sugar and drank 3litres of water a day - skin is amazing and looks clearly better.. I am just using a tiny amount of oil on it at night now but really need nothing more..

theDudesmummy · 14/06/2012 12:09

That is a good tip, I know I don't drink enough water (I don't use caffeine or sugar though, and am on low carb, but I probably do drink too much wine!)

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 15/06/2012 08:39

Well Rosehip is just fantastic! Skin feels lovely - it sort of plumps it up over night iykwim.
