gold-plated nightmare

I am going to be maid of honour in a few weeks. I never glam up so I went all out and requested an emerald dress ring (18k gold over silver) as my Christmas present from DH. I am wearing a green dress so this works well (I was aiming for Atonement levels of glamour, ha!).
Anyway, I have never worn the ring, only tried it on. I just took it out of the box and the ring is really badly tarnished. I am going to contact the maker (who has universally good reviews online, and they're based in the US which complicates things further) though it is now 6 months on so I doubt that I am "covered". What on earth could cause it to tarnish this way without being worn? It has been stored in a drawer with all my other jewellery (some of it also gold plated which hasn't tarnished). The room it's in can sometimes be very cold. Is there any way I can undo the tarnishing?

Tarnish is caused by jewellery not being worn.

Get a polishing cloth amazon for a fiver. It'll last you forever and means you can keep all your jewellery looking tip top.

thanks MrsC, I wondered whether the gold plate had somehow deteriorated by itself. I shall see whether the polishing cloth resolves it!
