I really do look terrible on photos! Are there any tricks or tips to improve my pictures? I always look far too toothy IYKWIM and a bit flat faced - nothing really like I do in real life.

Ask whoever is taking the picture to take it from a slightly higher point , and slightly to the side, rather than straight on, will give you more 3d and make most of bone structure
Lighting wise you want a warmish light eg glow not bright sunlight, to be on your face, not to close (think facing window about 6ft away)
Make sure you're wearing a flattering neck line too!

Tilt your chin down a little too (not enough to give you a double-chin!) and definitely turn your face slightly to one side. Wear a bit of blush on the apples of your cheeks. Not sure what you mean by toothy?

This was how I finally got a decent photo, nothing drastic, I just played around with shadows and lighting.
