Hi i'm euphemistically speaking "getting on in years" and am looking for a style that will suit my longish face

I had it short and flicky at the sides (a sort of Kate Silverman, but older) and got fed up with it because it looked like a cottage loaf and also I think it emphasises my big nose (self esteem not great today)

I've been growing it out and as its grown i've cut my fringe so it looks a bit like a bob shape with a fringe - i was aiming for a bob that is longer on top, straight cut at the back and gradated at the sides and comes to jawbone level.

What i actually have is a kind of rectangular shape with hair hanging down in two curtains and the fringe making the third side of the rectangle - it seems to make my face look longer

I'm going back to the drawing board and trying to think of a style that is low maintenance and will suit me - i don't want it short and i don't want many layers - i could just keep growing it for another 2-3 months and then go to a hairdressers but i don't know what style to go for

Any advice from MN style gurus?

I would chat to your stylist and see what they suggest, it's hard to give advice without seeing you in RL. Have a chat and see what they come up with :)

We need to see a pic of how it is now and hence what hair you have to work with.

You need to make your profile public, nell, it's not clickable at the minute.

crazynell · 30/05/2012 11:09

done! there's not much on my profile tho - its a working progress :)

Okay. I suggest a pixie with long layers on the top you can style up with wax. I think it would flatter you to have little kicks at the nape and have it cut in pretty short over the sides with wispy strands over the ears.

Your hair colour is fabulous but I think you need a trendier style when you have silver hair.

Honky · 30/05/2012 12:05

I agree. Love the colour of your hair, but the bob with fringe is aging and a bit frumpy (sorry).

I think you need to go shorter - this is a great shape.
Or a pixie.
This is lovely, very pretty, longer but without being frumpy. (Side parting also makes a long face and/or nose look shorter - speaking as someone with a long face AND nose).

I think you definitely have to lose the fringe if you want a bob.

Here's a great bob, here too - although not low maintenance!

crazynell · 30/05/2012 13:00

Thanks Queenie and Honky i know what you mean about livening it up - i'm a bit of a funky, messy, low maintenance type person - the picture of me was when i had a girl doing my hair who was a really good cutter - but i felt that the style she was giving me was too dull and frumpy, (altho nice and neat!) but not me, so i left her. I like the 2nd one of helen mirren with the longer hair.
I've just washed it this morning and instead of trying to smooth it down i've blow dried it up and out to accentuate the waviness and it feels better already - more me! altho my fringe is too chunky.
Thanks for complementing me on my hair colour - i've never wanted to colour it as i like it too, in my youth it was almost black, and i'm lucky (at my age, lol) to have such thick hair

I like this one: www.womanandhome.com/hair-and-beauty/317338/choppy-layered-hairstyle and this one www.womanandhome.com/hair-and-beauty/317361/long-bob-hairstyle
although i'd need to grow my hair a bit more.
What do you think?

I like the second one in your last link OP and I don't think it will take much to get your hair to that once you have the basic shape. Why don't you print it off and take it to a stylist and tell them that is what you are working towards?

QueenieLovesEels · 30/05/2012 15:05

Why don't you have a look at the Facebook page of going grey looking great. Lots of great photos there.

Wip hairport is another great one to google for inspiration. They have a section on flickr that is called-young at heart.

YoulllaughAboutItOneDay · 30/05/2012 15:49

Yes, yes, shorter and funkier. Less weight at the sides. I think that 'bob with chunky fringe' look is really tricky to pull off unless you are very young (as in, early 20s young) because it can so easily age your face. You have lovely bone structure so you could definitely pull off shorter hair.

crazynell · 30/05/2012 17:30

thank you Thanks!! you've given me lots of ideas to think about

This is whats great about MN - you can ask a question and you're are guaranteed to get a response and that people will put themselves out to help you - no matter what it is or who you are :)

Let us know what you decide! And then put an "after" photo on your profile page :)

valiumredhead · 30/05/2012 17:40

YY to the after photo! You have a lovely face, you can definitely carry something a bit funkier :)
