Summer, bah humbug!

Don't get me wrong, I love summer as a season, it's just summer clothes that make me really grumpy.

First there's the whole arm problem (followed in my case by the knee problem as well).
Then summer dresses -- why are they all so loathsome? Can't find a single one I like that actually suits me, and I really am a dress person.
And you have to give up the rather nice holding-in effect of tights.
And shorts are essentially the work of the devil.
And t shirts are really actually very unflattering, finding a good one is akin to finding the holy grail.

Normally I take refuge in having nice feet: I love sandals. But now my feet and ankles are swollen up I may have to hide in a darkened room until October.

how about a really nice light cotton shirt in white or pale blue?

madammecholet · 24/05/2012 12:22

I agree!

Here's my wish list for a summer dress:

  • Navy or Berry or Black or anything but Floral, neon, pastel.
  • Don't mind a small pattern, or the odd bird print. Chic.
  • Sleeves, preferably 3/4 or just above elbow. (ver flattering)
  • V neck, or boat neck, cowl neck or wrap dress. (as I have boobage)
  • To the knee, not 10" above the knee. Not below the knee. I'm 5'9. Not easy.
  • Semi Fitted but not tight, not clingy, but not dustbin bag loose.
  • Under £50
  • In cotton or cotton mix. Not Polyester.

Tricky!!

Madammecholet you have encapsulated everything I wish for in a summer dress. (Especially the just above elbow sleeves.) Where is our genie of the high street ready to make our slightest wish his command?

(BB: I can't do shirts as I have narrow shoulders. Shirts only work really well if you have quite wide shoulders.)

Its so frustrating, i've been looking for years!

There used to be a website where you could custom design you're own dress. Can't for the life of me find it now.....

ChablisLover · 24/05/2012 12:57

Madammecholet -you hit the nail on the head

if anyone ever makes such a dress they could make a fortune

I would try but my sewing skills are abysmal and it would look like a dogs dinner!

madammecholet · 24/05/2012 15:45

umm, just found a Get Cutie dress, but don't really like patterns,..

slouch dress

tis cotton though, boat neck, to the knee, 3/4 sleeves...

What do you think ladies?

niminypiminy · 24/05/2012 17:30

I think the pattern's a bit fierce. Same kind of shape though Mary Portas dress, though it's a bit over budget, and viscose. (So, basically, totally off-piste.)

Along the right lines though niminypiminy hate the tie waist belt on get cutie one and MP though.. Want empire line if poss...

niminypiminy · 24/05/2012 18:03

Yes you are right tie waists are the work of Satan. Empire line, yes, or slightly flared. Straight up and down shift dresses are vilely unflattering unless you have the figure of a lollip stick.

found this warehouse one.. whats the sizing like?

Bunbaker · 24/05/2012 20:13

I agree. Dresses at the moment are too long or too short. I managed to find a short sleeved knee length one in Next back in March and am pleased I snapped it up.
