Something like <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=pedal+pushers&start=80&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1366&bih=565&addh=36&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=XaUDoiUk-jmAGM:&imgrefurl=www.riverisland.com/Online/women/trousers--leggings/casual-trousers/navy-pedal-pushers-620019&docid=VASQe0jQFmGbzM&imgurl=riverisland.scene7.com/is/image/RiverIsland/620019_main%253F%2524hero%2524&w=430&h=430&ei=zBG8T_CDJIm28QP27dzJCg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=558&vpy=148&dur=187&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=111&ty=92&sig=106315689672970841637&page=5&tbnh=167&tbnw=167&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:10,s:80,i:26" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this would suit me (I have big thighs, but good calfs and ankles), but I don't want denim fabric (too hot).

I am 5'3'' and 11 stone (losing weight but very self concious as I have to lose 2 stones to be back to 'me').

Is anything out there that isn't frumpy? I know the obvious answer would be a skirt/ dress/ dress with leggings, but I want to be able to play with my boys at the park etc. and not be worried about showing off too much and leggings would be too hot.

Thanks in advance

Most of the shorts on this page fill me with horror and are far, far too short.

I am only 33, so want to dress young...

I bought a nice cotton knee-length pair from DP a few summers ago. Otherwise somewhere like bench might have a looser cargo-like style? I am liking the RI ones though.

Walnut8 · 23/05/2012 07:03

what about these?

or these

roughtyping · 23/05/2012 07:09

Argh, I know the feeling :( I'm 26, 5'2 and 10.5 stone.

I'm on my phone so I'm afraid I can't link but I wear board shorts on holiday - knee length lightweight ones, usually animal/roxy/fat face.

Destrier · 23/05/2012 22:34

Thank you! Those suggestions are ideal - I always forget about Dorothy Perkins!

And the board shorts look good for playing with the boys!

I am 5'1 and have big hips and fat thighs. I look absolutely terrible in knee length shorts as they just accentuate the problem IMO. I think its better to go for something mid-thigh length and looser like these

roughtyping · 23/05/2012 23:11

Board shorts are fab :)

I always go for longer as my legs are fat down to knees :( they sort themselves after that though - have such shapely ankles! Wink

MerylStrop · 23/05/2012 23:24

i am being cruel to be kind here....but you cant have it all:
shorts only really look good with good legs
shorts that look good with not good legs will be frumpy by definition
dresses/skirts - maxis, midis, even kneelength a-line should be fine for mucking about in the park....

blueemerald · 23/05/2012 23:59

I bought some shorts very similar to the ones you linked to (slightly darker blue and made of slightly stretchy material) in Primark about 3 weeks ago. They are really flattering (I'm 5'2 and 10 stone). I have worn them loads and they have washed really well. I think they were £11ish.

Walnut8 · 24/05/2012 04:41

It's rubbish to say that shorts only look good with good legs! If you have nice calves, then you can look good and not at all frumpy in well-fitting knee-length shorts. Sure, if your thighs are absolutely huge it might be hard to find a pair that skim rather than cling but you don't need great legs to wear a pair of non-frumpy cargo-style or knee-length shorts. I think they can be as flattering as a pencil skirt if you wear them with the right top and shoes.

Destrier · 24/05/2012 16:41

From the knee down, my legs are great and I look good in knee length skirts, I was just struggling to find good sorts. (Also my arms are the same - bingo wings, yet great forarms, wrists and hands. Good shoulders and collar bone, but bf-ing boobs and bad stomach and hips)

I disagree with skirts being ok for the park - too long and you get tangked in them, and short and you can't climb or crawl.

A young mum bent over to tend her child in a pram yesterday and those stnding nearby could see everyting (and her knickers were up her bum...). I like skirts, but they're not practical...

Thanks again for the helpful advice.

So, I bought:

knee shorts

vests in a few colours

shrug to cover shoulders

these dresses are great

this top - better in rl

For anyone who's interested!!
