Shoes? Boots? Converse? Help my poor feet

Hi,

I desperately need your footwear advice ... Following excellent advice on here last year I hae a much improved wardrobe ... Right down to my ankles.

I work from home and wear slippers all day, so shoes are school run, weekend affairs. I have Very Fat Feet (I wonder if this is because I have spent four years in slippers). I actually went into a shoe shop talking about pinching yesterday. So I wear so nasty clarkes t bar shoes. With socks. Everywhere. Or I squeeze my poor toes into an old pair of boots and hobble a bit.

I normally wear jeans and tops (gap jeans, phase eight tops). I cannot walk in heels. I've tried honest. I'm nearly forty so I'm not optimistic about learning now. Footwear should be relatively flat and accommodate my fat feet and toes.

I considered converse but DH has vetoed on the basis that I am old, not cool, and they wot go with my wardrobe. What sre my options? Are ankle boots ok? Haven't worn them since the 80s so a little dubious.

Getting to shops is difficult so will mainly be tinternet shopping too...

Any help and me and my feet would much appreciate it

What do you usually wear? I am a similar age to you and live in Converse for much of the year though am considering suplementing with a pair of Superga Grin

Converse and the like are quite narrow though, I think you would need to try on.

GobblersKnob · 19/05/2012 08:43

Sorry, you said what you usually wear, I am not awake yet. Converse from Amazon are free postage and returns so you could try.

MsGee · 19/05/2012 08:45

I am normally in a manky pair of clarks t bar things that I bought when pg... I also have brown boots but they're a bit meh.

I did worry about fit of converse. They have a couple of pairs at local ship so I could try for size and order online. Am worried they might be too casual though to match the rest if my outfit though.

You are not too old for Converse.

I am 47 and wear them with combats and skinny jeans all the time and no one bats an eye lid.
My teenagers would be the first to say 'Mummmmmmmm Noooooo!!!!'

carrie74 · 19/05/2012 09:18

I wear Converse (but they're a bit narrow, so you'd need to try them), long boots in winter (Russell & Bromley bought 2 years ago, and still look fantastic), Birkenstocks or flip flops in summer. Not sure what tops you're wearing that Converse won't go...I'd also look at Superga, and pfFlyers if you think you can get over the trainer issue.

diamondsonthesolesofhershoes · 19/05/2012 09:24

If you like converse, have you looked at vans? Step away from the big clunky ones but I've just bought a pair of super-lo ones (I think that's right). They're slip on pumps but they are actual foot shape rather than silly skinny as pumps sometimes are.

Having said that, I live may-October in flip flops. A good sturdy pair (haivanas(sp) are great) and well maintained feet and you're laughing!

Slippers dont make your feet spread, it's an old wives tale.

It's like saying if you wear size 8 clothes all the time you wont get overweight.

PG does make feet wider though, as does weightgain. I've had patients who wont lose weight as their shoes will be too big for them.

QueenCadbury · 19/05/2012 13:11

You are not too old for converse. I'm 38 and wear virtually every day. From what you've said they sound like they'd go with the rest of your wardrobe.

Sleepwalkingdiscodancer · 19/05/2012 13:22

Try camPers!!

queenpin · 19/05/2012 13:59

I've got black one star (I think) converse which velcro on if you find the laced converse too tight.

They are nicer than they sound, honest. V comfortable and mine are all black apart from the star and a single white stripe so go with everything.

queenpin · 19/05/2012 14:03

Didn't describe them very well Blush

these kind of thing

MsGee · 19/05/2012 17:26

Oooh thank you! I was with a few friends today who all wore converse so combined with this thread i am convinced.

DH is not some weirdy control man from land of fuckwittery - he just normally had good fashion sense (and I honestly have none) so I tend to ask his advice (on this one issue Grin ).

I shall report back.

I suspect foot fatness is a consequence of cake consumption and weight increase not slippers then. Shame really. I liked the slipper theory!

You're not too old for converse.
As others have said though, they are narrow.

If you have feet smaller than a 6, you'd maybe better to try boy/kids ones.
I'm sure they're wider!

cocolepew · 19/05/2012 17:33

I always find Converse big. Birkies inthe summer.

NoVeggiesBeforeEggies · 19/05/2012 17:34

Please excuse my terrible wording![blush

pudding25 · 19/05/2012 19:29

I have the hugely wide feet and find converse really comfy (and I'm 40 too and wear them all the time!).

ChablisLover · 19/05/2012 20:58

If you are 36 you are not too old for converse and the like.

I'm the same age and they are a staple in my house. So if you're too old then so am
I. Dh also calls me a 30something trying to look like a teenager but do i heck listen to him?Grin especially when I see he has resurrected his vans this week

I have wide fit and like the fact you can tie them and adjust that way.

tajmout · 20/05/2012 09:37

Converse only look good but not very comfortable.

NorksAreMessy · 20/05/2012 09:42

Can I put in a little vote for FlyLondon.
I have pudgy feet, and they are FAB

NorksAreMessy · 20/05/2012 09:43

oooh, and I am 48 and have 5 pairs of Converse

CockBollocks · 20/05/2012 10:10

I have this pair of converse and I have wide feet. I love them!! They are very comfortable and I think look a little less casual than the full converse.

dance

Some of the espadrilles on Office look nice too.
