Gel nails: should the layers be thick or thin?

I've been having Jessica gel nails applied since the start of the year, on and off, by my local salon.

The first few times I had the same therapist and she always applied thick layers, which seemed to last really well, and my natural nails grew well.

The past couple of appointments have been with another therapist who admits to being an acrylic specialist rather than gel, and seems a bit nervous about what she's doing. She is very diligent and applies thin layers. I had to have them taken off once at another salon and they commented that they were thin.

So what should they be like? I don't find they last as well when done by the second therapist, although she seems to take more care. I'm a nail biter and I seem to be able to bite through the nails she applies quite easily. She also buffed them pre-application which won't have helped my natural soft nails.

I don't want to complain to the salon, just want to make sure I get the right therapist going forward. How should they be done please?

Whenever I've seen them they are always quite thick, think that is partly due to the layers of treatments applied as well as the nail varnish itself.

i've had various...calgel for a while, and now...don't know what it's called, I just ask for gels (they don't speak much english in my salon, but they're great and v v cheap) and it's always been very thick. That's fine by me, as I have a very manual / physical job and need rock hard nails

the buffing is to make the gels adhere better i think. they buff mine to smithereens
