Why do people call leather "buttery"

I have never felt butter unlike leather.

Because buttery leather is all soft and squidgey and lovely.

It's not like butter though

But butter is soft and squidgey and lovely.

both originate from the same animal :o

It's a simile; "as soft as butter".
