Properly good once-a-day sunscreen

Which do you recommend?

I want it to be easy to apply, not smell unpleasant, and actually last all day.

Is this possible?

Ultrasun. So much that I used to have it sent over to Perth when I lived in Australia. Don't use anything else on DS. You can get good deals on QVC which, if you don't like you can return in 30 days.

We have always used the boot Soltan Once with no problems - if you are swimming a lot then the childrens one gives you longer in water.

I have 2 luminous white gingerish children and they have never burnt.

Another fan of P20 here, husband is "sun sensitive" and does not burn or react to this as it doesn't clog the pores. Use it on all 3 children in Tenerife, although did reapply in afternoon as they were in water all day. Only downside is it doesn't smell too good.

I just used ultra sun in Australia and it was fab. I did reapply on the DC's but that is because I am paranoid about the sun.
It sinks in and you really cannot feel it on your skin. The one for face is great as well.

We've used p20 which is very good, then last year used ultrasun and boots.

The p20 does sting a bit on the face according to ds (dd never says it does) but is very good.
Ultrasun very good but can only buy in select places
Boots is quite thick and yellow and stained all clothes and is thick to apply.

The piz buin one can cause allergies so we've steered way from that one. The best have been ultrasun or p20. I don't reapply either after swimming unless the kids have towel dried themselves and rubbed it off. Ds burnt his back one year because he had dried himself with a towel and I didn't reapply it. Now I normally apply in the morning and again after lunch when we're on holidays just to be sure they're covered.

Nothing to add about sunscreen, but I can tell you it's bloody sweltering here in Seville at the moment. I'd aim to do all your sightseeing (if that's why you're here) as early as possible in the morning.

Enjoy your trip.

Have also tried the boots stuff and yes it does stain. Plus DS hates the texture of it, much thicker and harder to apply than the piz buin (didn't know about the allergy thing though)

Thanks notasgreen - I think it's supposed to calm down a little bit by next week.

Next week it should be just lovely again.

Read the literature. There's nothing that lasts all day. High SPFs are suspect because they lead to complacency and longer exposure to the sun.

Hat, glasses, long sleeves, stay in the shade.

nannyn · 11/05/2012 13:08

Ultra sun gets my vote. Just make sure you follow the instructions & apply first thing. We did reapply on toddlers face but only because I was scrubbing it after meals! I have really pale sensitive skin & it worked brilliantly.

supernannyisace · 11/05/2012 15:10

But echt the likes of Ultrasun and P20 are not classed as all day because of the high SPF - it is the chemicals in the lotion, which are more photostable that make it work long term.

I wouldn't dream of using a regular sun lotion - whatever SPF and expect it to last a full day - with sweat/water/clothing rubbing. However I have used the P20 and ultrasun all day long - even on lily white skin on first day of a sunny hol in wintertime and they do work.

I do agree though that we should cover up part of the day. It has to be the best protection.

ravencathy · 11/05/2012 20:13

Piz Buin for me.

firsttimemum10 · 05/09/2017 09:13

You should try Calypso Once a Day. I've been using it for years and never burnt once. It absorbs easily, lasts all day and has a neutral smell.
