Your ideal fancy dress party - who would you go as and why?

DH and I are going to one, no theme. I think I'd like to do proper dress up and hire a costume but have no idea who/what to go as.

So I am seeking inspiration! Who would you like to transform yourself into?

Not really who I want to be, and really not glam, but best fancy dress I ever did with DH was him as George Lucas and me as Steven Spielberg for a movie themed party.

It was BRILLIANT. Wore a beard, wig, aviator specs, baseball cap, checked shirt tucked into blue jeans. It was totally unexpected and rather marvellous.

I'd love to do a Liza Minnelli in Cabaret, or a PROPER Judy Garland in Wizard of Oz. Went as an Ice Cream to a letter 'I' themed party once.

I love fancy dress. Fricking LOVE it.

Mombo, I love the ice cream. I also love the idea of going as a man. I have problems with glam! But would love to pull it off..

I hate fancy dress.

Atreegrowsinbrooklyn · 10/05/2012 19:18

A tornado -

You wear a long dark grey T shirt dress (or similar) with a hood, attach toy cars and buses, plastic trees, cows and houses onto long pieces of thin fishing string and then attach the string to the dress. When you spin around in a circle...Hey Presto, A Tornado!

WMDinthekitchen · 10/05/2012 21:19

A hippy. Am of the ageing variety but can't really carry it off in RL any more. One of my old long dresses (black silk velvet, feels lovely), headband, flower painted on my cheek, lots of chains and bracelets, flowers. Brings it all back...

Babylon1 · 10/05/2012 21:21

I've done the wonder woman thing before, proper costume from an outfitters etc, DH has done starwars trooper thing too - brilliant Grin

Antidote · 10/05/2012 21:24

Mulder & scully. It's one of DH's little fantasies so it would be good to have the excuse Blush

We frequently go as Jedi knights in the djelabis we got in Morocco.

LaFataTurchina · 10/05/2012 21:49

I would go as some kind of fairy/wood nymph. - Mainly because I spent my entire childhood wishing/pretending I could be one and was v. disappointed at never developing magical powers.

I have my ideal outfit planned and everything - Hair loose with loads of flowers in it, floaty Grecian style dress, soft not plastic wings that I would sew on to the back of it, old satin ballet shoes with ribbons.

BestIsWest · 10/05/2012 22:02

I once went as Marge Simpson. Took me weeks to get the yellow paint off. My mum kept asking if I was sure I wasn't jaundiced.

Spink · 10/05/2012 22:56

Lol at yellow Marge.
Tornado is splendid but I fear I would batter people with cars & cows during the drunken flailing / dancing part of the evening.
I am trying to extract fantasy duos from dh but no joy so far.. Alan partridge & his secretary Lynn would prob be up his street..

Not a fan of fancy dress myself (too much pressure), but surely you need a theme??

A friend did a party where you had to dress as someone who shared your birthday - quite a challenge!

With no theme maybe take yourself off to a costume hire place and have some fun trying stuff on!

fallenangle · 11/05/2012 00:39

With no theme to restrain or inspire I'd go with my own fantasy or DPs (if he'll tell you), what I know I look good in or what I feel good in.

underthevalley · 11/05/2012 01:40

I've been a flapper, a hippy and someone into 'disco' (but then they were all made from things I had)
Also been a gangster and a NFL player (for which I wore the shirt as a dress)
I was Darth Mor once for a star wars theme.
Ohh I did the wizard of oz (of the sluty sort) I was miss garland- cut up my old school dress

I went to on once where you had to dress of something beginning with your initial - I went as a Kangaroo

When I was a kid I dressed as a paintbrush. Wore an all in one black leotard and spike my hair all up and coloured the ends.

Best one though was a roman party- just a sheet and sandals.

Spink · 11/05/2012 10:09

It's at the Rivoli in Lindon, no theme but think it is pretty glam..

I've been as Gene Symons from Kiss. It's easy to do and doesn't cost very much at all. Just need a wig and some black and White make up. If you could rope three more people in you'd have the whole band!
Tip for the make up is draw the black parts on first with a black eyeliner and fill it in with the black face paint.
