Shampoo for itchy scalp?

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 09/05/2012 07:44

Does anyone have an itchy scalp and use a decent shampoo which doesn't exacerbate the itchiness? It's driving me mad!

I'm sure someone does one of these deep clean ones or non-build up type - would that help?

Neutrogena T Gel. ££ but worth it.
Vosene good too form scalp, but really dries my hair out.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 09/05/2012 08:22

Ok I'll take a look. Hair is kind of combination so don't want a drying one. Thanks. Smile

L'oreal Elvive-dark blue bottle

valiumredhead · 09/05/2012 08:43

YY the blue bottle with the orange lid - amazing stuff and fantastic for hair especially if you combine it with the red colour care conditioner also by L'Oreal.

Thank you. One of you may save my sanity!

Is that the anti-dandruff one? Just seen it half price on the Boots website. Wonder if the tiny Boots near me stocks it...?

Polytar, strong and smelly but sorts my itches out brilliantly.
I found that Liz Earle shampoos keep itchiness at bay too but it's quite expensive. Sad
T-Gel dries my hair. And not effective enough for me.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 09/05/2012 09:20

Only use that Elvive one if it's actually dandruff, if you just have a dry scalp it could make it worse. However, for dandruff it is the only thing that keeps me sane! In my local boots it with the men's shampoos. If you have dry skin rather than dandruff, I would suggest using Johnson's camomile shampoo, the yellow baby one.

RationalBrain · 09/05/2012 09:21

T Gel - not the dandruff one, that makes it worse, just the regular one. Not every day, just twice a week or so, to keep it under control. Then Simple shampoo the rest of the time (very sensitive to all kinds of fragrances etc!).

redrubyshoes · 09/05/2012 09:23

Don't use the Head and Shoulders Itchy Scalp if you have dyed hair - it literally strips the colour out.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 09/05/2012 09:25

MrsMangoBiscuit, I don't think it actually is dandruff. I don't have any on my shoulders like my mum does. But I do have lots of horrendous eczema patches on my legs and a couple of small ones on my arms. So maybe dandruff shampoo not best?

Yes, it could be a kind of dermatitus, mine is. I get eczema etc as well. That's what the original T Gel is for. Also definitely look at your regular shampoo, and switch to something fragrance free etc.

inneedofchocolate · 09/05/2012 09:31

Nizoral or anything that contains ketoconazole. It's used for skin and scalp conditions and can be found in any chemist in the shampoo section.

warmandwooly · 09/05/2012 09:40

Go to the docs and they can prescribe something. I forgot what its called but it was given to me for itchiness etc

RachelHRD · 09/05/2012 09:41

Itchy scalp could be caused by a reaction to the SLS on shampoo. I swapped to an SLS free shampoo and no more itching!! Sainsbos sell one which is great and cleans well. It's the Happy hair days range and the conditioner is really good too.

OneOfMyTurnsComingOn · 09/05/2012 13:33

Ah, good thinking. Are there many without?

Philip Kingsley shampoo for itchy flaky scalp. It is the best.

I have used it for years now and never use anything else. Expensive but now I buy 1 litre bottles direct from their website for about £48 which lasts me almost a year.

valiumredhead · 09/05/2012 15:07

The ginger shampoo in The Body Shop is cheaper and very similar to PK according to my friend.

PK is cheaper if you shop around on line ime.

shelldockley · 09/05/2012 15:13

Kerastase Bain Gommage I have itchy scalp but not dandruff and this stuff is great, really gentle, and doesn't strip the colour from my hair like H&S.

slug · 09/05/2012 15:18

While not possessed of an itchy scalp, I do get excema on my back. I've found switching to Boots itchy scalp shampoo had worked wonders. It's the stuff in the plain bottle that sits on the shelves with the aqueous cream and the like.

mirry2 · 09/05/2012 15:22

start with Tgel and if it doesn't improve get a referral to a dematologist. I did as my hair was also starting to fall out. i was prescribed pills to take which cured both. I had something called lichtis plantis (? sp?) - Sorry it was a long time ago and my memory is shot

saythatagain · 09/05/2012 15:24

I second what snail1973 said - Phillip Kingsley shampoo for itchy scalp; 'tis marvellous stuff.

And a quick hijack - are you still enjoying your Parlux haidryer valiumredhead ? I'm desperate to buy one!

valiumredhead · 09/05/2012 17:13

say YES!!!! I have actually grown my hair as it has cut down so much drying time. I would never use anything else now -really worth the money!

AND SCALP IS IN FAB CONDITION AND NON ITCHY - oops caps lock - for the first time in years thanks to blue L'Oreal shampoo. Every day is a good hair day atm Grin

thriftychic · 09/05/2012 17:19

i found changing to a shampoo without sulphates cured my itchy head problem

Iatemyskinnyperson · 09/05/2012 17:40

Yy to sulfate free shampoo. I'm using moogoo shampoo and body wash ATM : here got it from a local chemist. It's very mild but smells pretty nice, and has amusing pics of cows on the bottle.
