Help! Are fascinators really "out"? Wedding tomorrow...

I was planning to smarten up my slightly dull breastfeeding navy dress with a pink fascinator in my hair and pink pashmina. Now everyone (well, my mum, the paper and today's Woman's Hour) says fascinators have had their day, and no self-respecting woman is wearing them any more.

Is this right? I've never worn one before, but don't want to embarrass myself at the first exciting social event I've been to in two years!

Can anyone advise me???

The duchess of Cambridge still wears them. She knows about head wear.
