Moissanite or man-made diamonds

I was asking about man-made diamonds recently, and these are the rings I like:

here
and <a class="break-all" href="http://www.cartier.com/show-me/jewelry/n4231000-cartier-damour-solitaire-pavewww.cartier.com/show-me/jewelry/n4188400-ballerine-solitaired-with-diamonds" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here.

Can anyone help me find anything like them? In moissanite or man-made diamonds obv!

Sorry, posted too soon. 2nd link not working.

Anyone? Anyone??
Anyone even like the rings at all? Aren't they worth a mention?
I think they're gorgeous.

The reason I'm looking for moissanite or man-made is because they're vastly cheaper than natural diamonds. But just as good, probably.

I really like the rings- very unusual. No idea where to find them in moissanite though sorry.

lurkingaround · 04/05/2012 21:39

Thanks milky. They are lovely, aren't they? I think my fav is the 2nd one, The Cartier d'amour.

This any good for the first one?

lurkingaround · 04/05/2012 22:05

Yes, it's lovely Edith.Smile Is it zircon or diamond? Or neither? It's a bit confusing on the website. Am going to have a wander about their rings now. Looks like they've a very good returns policy.

This is also nice. But what do they mean by 'platinum clad'? Does it just mean platinum plated?

Hi Lurking. The cartier ring is based on the design of an edwardian target ring. Might be able to broaden the search a little.

Will have a hunt around the internet - had a look at the tru-diamonds site. It's just manmade diamonds with a trademarked name from what I can gather.

mrscumberbatch · 04/05/2012 22:14

I'd assume it's platinum plated - most important question is what on earth is it plated onto? Can't find it anywhere on the site.... if it's onto base metal I'd steer clear as they'd be massively overpriced for base metal rings.

mrscumberbatch · 04/05/2012 22:20

this looks lovely. Very similar to an edwardian target ring.....

EdithWeston · 04/05/2012 22:21

I've no idea what's under the plating.

I've got one of their trilogy rings, and it looks very convincing. The website seems to say the stones are a (non cubic) variant of zircon.

mrscumberbatch · 04/05/2012 22:22

this looks like a straight up copy of a ring by Omega. Beautiful

crosspatched · 04/05/2012 22:25

moissaniteco are brilliant, all their rings are great, they do real precious metals and palladium (like platinum but cheaper!) - mine get compliments all the time.

mrscumberbatch · 04/05/2012 22:26

Palladium is the same family as platinum, looks the same but is cheaper and harder wearing - what's not to like Wink!

DialsMavis · 04/05/2012 22:26

Have you thought about a vintage second hand ring from Ebay? My engagement ring is the most beautiful thing I have ever owned (diamonds and 18c white gold) and it was about £200. We are broke and I don't like the idea of non ethical new diamonds

lurkingaround · 04/05/2012 22:52

They are gorgeous mrsc. I was hoping you were around tonight!
I had thought I'd wait and but in the USA, but that may or may not be until Sept and may or may not happen at all. So I think I'll start having a look around here. My ideal is probably moissanite, (following your advice!), and palladium, in that kind of Edwardian design. I didn't know it was an Edwardian design, how little do I know. I will have a look around moissaniteco, I really like those links. Their shipping costs are very reasonable.

Wait and buy in the USA, not but!

mrscumberbatch · 04/05/2012 23:11

Haha when I saw it 'moissanite' pop up on active threads I knew it was you straight away!

It's worth looking around ehre but if you think you might be in the US later this year it's definitely a good bet. Exchange rates aren't as reasonable as they once were but you can still expect to save £50- £100 by buying over there.

The shipping does seem quite reasonable for moissaniteco. Only problem is that you'd probably have to pay additional import tax on top of it which is graded based on value of item shipped. For a £100 item I've had to pay £30 to get it here before. (Through gritted teeth I might add!)

lurkingaround · 04/05/2012 23:19

I wonder is it worth going for the Amora gems instead of the regular gem?
Looks like it probably is, colour is G-H diamond equivalent.

Tranquilidade · 04/05/2012 23:19

I bought a lovely ring a while ago but it is spoilt as the plating wears off rings quite quickly as they do get rubbed, etc. Would never buy anotherplated one again

mrscumberbatch · 04/05/2012 23:24

Lurking.... I wouldn't know without seeing them irl to be honest but I'd just go for whatever your heart says is nicest.

Tranquil, is it base metal that's been plated or silver or gold?

lurkingaround · 04/05/2012 23:28

Oooh, import tax. Forgot that one. Yes, gritting teeth here too. That adds to the price quite a bit. Hmm. Will continue to look at the rings, and see what's happening re USA.

I'm very taken with their rings. They really are what I fancy atm. And the website is very informative about moissanite. To think I only learned about moissanite a week or 2 ago!Wink

Thanks mrsc, you're a font of information.Smile

Only when it comes to jewellery. If it's anything actually sensible I'm absolutely useless Grin

AKissIsNotAContract · 04/05/2012 23:30

If it's the ethics you are concerned about, they have lovely rings here

BigusBumus · 05/05/2012 13:48

How do you promounce moissanite?
