Over 40 and wearing leather jacket?

sphynx · 29/04/2012 11:12

I bought a black leather jacket from Mint Velvet. I really like it, it fits well and is lovely and soft. I am just a bit worried if I can pull it off. I am 41 years old, is this too old for a black leather jacket? Do any other over 40 year olds here wear them and how do you wear it? I plan to wear with indigo or black jeans. I was a bit worried after I saw article in the Daily Mail of Chris Jenner wearing black leather jacket and being accused of trying to dress too young. I don't actually plan to wear pink skinnies and animal print shoes with it!

No of course you're not too old! But personally I found black did make me look a big 'ageing Goth' so bought a chocolate one instead. I also don't like black coats/shoes with blue jeans much so brown worked better for me for that reason too.

If I DID have a black one, I'd probably wear it more with dresses and skirts than with jeans - little ditsy silk or cotton dresses with biker boots - but I am still a bit of a Grunge-kid at heart! :)

southeastastra · 29/04/2012 11:31

course not! and surely everthing in mint velvet is aimed at the over 40s anyway so bound to be a nice style

madmomma · 29/04/2012 11:32

Oh gosh I don't think you're too old at all! It sounds lovely, and I plan on wearing mine into my 60s (but at that point I'm thinking I'll be putting it with palazzos or a long skirt rather than jeans)

HandMadeTail · 29/04/2012 11:34

I have bought a lovely biker style jacket. It's black, but a soft light leather, not heavy and goth-like. But it's been so wet, I have barely worn it Sad

I am well over 40.

fallenangle · 29/04/2012 11:38

Sounds absolutely fine. If you were planning on wearing it with an above the knee skirt I 'd worry for you, but jeans should look great.

Jennyrosity · 29/04/2012 11:42

My mum is 56 and still wears black leather trousers, never mind jackets! I think she looks awesome in them, and as she points out, they're actually very practical for grandma duties - DD has thrown up on them, peed on them, the works, and they just wipe clean!

So in conclusion, no, I don't think you're too old for a leather jacket!

mirpuppet · 29/04/2012 12:29

Fine also if you want to wear with an above need skirt fine.

Just came back from my child's gymnastic class this morning and 5 out of 10 mums had on fitted leather jacket despite rain. Indeed as I purchased one this week I think the look maybe verging into mumsy territory.

SwedishEdith · 29/04/2012 12:41

If the DM was criticising it that would be a reason to think it's OK. I've just got one from Ebay - I like to ignore that fact I probably look like think I look like an ageing a cool rock chick in mine.

anewyear · 29/04/2012 12:50

Im 45, and have a black 'biker' look leather that I got from a Next sale, love it.
Ive also got what I can only discribe as a slightly 'distressed look' brown leather 'biker' look, not leather tho, but its so soft, love this one almost as much Smile

wheresthepopcorn · 29/04/2012 14:58

My aunt is 60 and looks amazing in her black leather jacket. It is a classic style and just looks amazing with her blonde hair and petite frame. OP, I think you have many years before you have to worry about being too old for something - sounds like you have good taste :)

NewMatic · 29/04/2012 15:00

I have a pleather one I've just rediscovered. I like with sift knitwear on a timing colour. Not keen on too bikery ones.
Mine was from crappy wallis

ninah · 29/04/2012 15:01

I am 45 and I wear leather

sphynx · 29/04/2012 15:21

Thank-you for your replies, ladies. Pleased to hear you all think its fine, because I do like it alot, just wanted to hear other opinions.

Mirpuppet, your post did make me laugh. I do think I would rather look mumsy than as if I was trying to dress like my daughter!

NewMatic, I remember seeing the Wallis ones a while ago and thinking they were quite good for faux leather. Blogger WIT recommended it to someone on her blog.

I've still got my leather jacket from my punk days, and if I ever lose enough weight, I shall wear it again. I love it!

PorkyandBess · 29/04/2012 15:29

I can't see many young people wearing leather jackets, so they're fine for older people.

StyleGuile · 29/04/2012 15:33

I have a cream Oasis leather jacket that I love - I wear it with skinny jeans, long striped top and biker boots, over tea dresses, with wide legged jeans - anything really! I love the fact that it is so warm without being too bulky. Just get yours on as soon as you can - before the moment passes!

AgeingFop · 30/04/2012 10:40

As my name suggests, I'm no spring chicken and I have two leather jackets - no, make that three - which I wear all the time. Black, obviously.

If I look like an ageing punk/goth/rocker/whatever I really couldn't care less.

Respect to the 56 year old lady in leather trousers!

conorMAC1 · 02/12/2013 13:21

I luv leather on women especially leather blazers. Absolutely gorgeous and looks great with jeans. dresses and skirts. I think more women over 40 should wear leather. Women are at their most beautiful when they hit 40.

PoshPaula · 02/12/2013 13:48

Oh for goodness sake. Get it on. Enjoy!!

HelloBoys · 02/12/2013 14:13

oh FGS of course you can wear leather jackets!

I guess I'd better tell my friends of 40 and slightly younger (late 30's) and I to ditch all our black leather jackets in various styles from frilled to biker.

Personally - if it is the cheaper sort (Miss Selfridge) I'd maybe not wear leather jacket but more expensive (think Oasis, Warehouse waterfall etc) then go for it. I suit biker styles for example always have done so I wear them, not 24/7 but sometimes. and good cover ups.

50ShadesOfMaybe · 02/12/2013 14:47

Just make sure you're wearing it with your denim shorts and tights! (See other am-I-too-old thread.)

Honestly, what is it with these worries. We seem to have one on MN S&B every few weeks. Just wear what you like the look of and what you feel suits you. What you wear (out of work an any rate) should be fun in my opinion. Don't limit yourself based on a number!

burnishedsilver · 02/12/2013 19:10

Leather jackets are ageless. My mother is in her 70s and wears her leather jacket with style.

I think we're too old for cheap imitations. Mint velvet jackets are beautiful.

SnookyAnyFuckerPooky · 02/12/2013 19:35

I'm 44 and own 3 leather jackets, one of them is red!

Whitecat · 02/12/2013 21:33

Way over 40 and loving my fantastically soft chesnut brown Firetrap leather jacket. It even has a zip out extra high collar for the winter. Mmmm.

Bradsplit · 02/12/2013 21:34
