Smart Clothes for Men - Not Suits

I've name-changed for this because it will out me. Would welcome any opinions, links and suggestions basically.

I'm trying to find an outfit for my groom at the moment. He doesn't want to wear a suit and doesn't want to wear a tie either. We are not having a particularly weddingy wedding and I am fine with this. However he wants to look fairly smart so that a) people won't laugh at him b) I think he'd like to feel attractive.

I'm thinking of a smart shirt/waistcoat combination. He's slender and looks good in waistcoats as a result. But I'm having trouble finding nice ones. We don't like the brocade type waistcoats with the satiny backs that you get from wedding shops, but I can't find anything straightforward on places like ASOS. I've been trying to find a silk shirt because I figured that would be nice, but the ones I did find were £200 and he vetoed having something that expensive, even though I pointed out my dress cost more than that. Also, they didn't have a light blue option which is the colour that suits him best. He doesn't like over fussy things with too many chains and buttons hanging off them.

Some here

waistcoats

Will be hard to find one without the satiny backs because they are intended to be part of a suit, as a rule, so the back is kept very thin so as to reduce bulk for better fit of suit jacket, and to keep heat down.

Have you thought about a blazer and a nice shirt?

I spend ages trying to avoid wearing suits and ties: used to have a job where I had to wear them all the time. Grew to hate them.

For "occasions" I tend to favour a smart jacket, patterned shirt and slim-cut, flat-front trousers. I like waistcoats but, as you say, they can be difficult to get hold of. If blazers are a bit "golf club" for your OH, what about a Nehru collar? Or possibly a miltary styled jacket to go with those steampunk waistcoats?
