I have (quite large) pearl stud in my ears. Have worn for years. Someone once told me, they "lift" your face. I feel, naked without them.

I've also got a string of pearls given to me, by my mum but I don't wear them as often as I'd like because I tend to feel a bit "dressed up" in them.

Get some.

Mombojombo · 26/04/2012 16:40

Oh yes! I've got one necklace with big fat fake ones, and a double strand of the real deal left to me by my nan. I wear them both a LOT. More versatile than you might think.

Brandalley has some pearls on sale at the moment, 85% off..some are really pretty. Have a look, you may like (all of) them :)

I think it also depends on how you wear them, but generally, pearls are a such a classic, you cannot go wrong.

There is some discussion on the size of pearls you should wear for your age (i.e. larger pearls being suitable for older ladies, etc.) have a read, but go for what you feel comfortable!

I wear them all the time, but I am quite old fashioned in style. Small, double strand are my preference, the bigger fakes make me feel like Frank N Furter Grin

Iwantcandy · 26/04/2012 16:55

They are beautiful. My favourites Grin

Poledra · 26/04/2012 17:00

I wear a string of small pearls left to me by my gran. I love them, and don't care what anyone else thinks. Smile Some very good friends of mine clubbed together and bought me the perfect pair of drop pearl earrings for my 40th to go with the necklace. They do make me feel quite dressed up, though.

heroutdoors · 26/04/2012 17:00

You say " short string". That would be good : pearls on skin.
NEVER on cloth, that does look old lady( like they wear on their blouse or sweater ) horrible, unless you go the other way and turn it to a Coco Chanel
arrangement...
Please don't let your DH buy them by himself. You must try them on!
There are so many different colours.

lisaro · 26/04/2012 17:19

I wear my pearls during the day maybe once a week. I also have a string of black pearls I wear about the same. The number of positive comments I get is a real morale booster.

sweetheart · 26/04/2012 17:53

I got given some pearl earings for my 30th birthday and I love them - wear them almost every day. Dh also got me this bracelet for Christmas which he had engraved with the childrens names which I also love and wear nearly every day

tunaday · 26/04/2012 18:13

I wear little pearl (fake) earrings virtually all the time. Today I've got jeggings, a baggyish jumper with a longer t shirt under, biker type boots and a pretty scarf. They just go with everything and look as glam or as casual as the outfit you wear them with. I think they're classic and don't look old-ladyish unless you wanted them to.

mrsebojones · 26/04/2012 18:20

Dh bought me a longish string of the real deal for my 30th birthday 5 years ago. They are mixed colours - sort of bronzes, cream and greys - and there is no clasp. They just go over the head. I love them. I wear them dressed up and dressed down and always get lots of comments on them.

abitcoldupnorth · 26/04/2012 18:21

I got this for our 10th anniversary and love it.

I have my eye on some earrings from this place too ...

thriftychic · 26/04/2012 19:18

seems to be a lot of variation on prices !

I've got a pair of pearl drop earrings upstairs that DH bought me years and years ago. I think I'll dig them out.

So am I right in thinking...

Natural are better than cultured, but cultured are better than freshwater?

drywhiteplease · 26/04/2012 19:40

I wear my pearl studs almost every day....love them. Classy, chic, flattering.(chandeliers for eve).... Have a short string if pearls and wear them occasionally but with caution.

TheBolter · 26/04/2012 19:46

I wear pearl studs every day, and have a short necklace of pearls that was given to me as an heirloom. I agree with the poster above who said that pearl earrings 'lift' your face - I too feel naked without them. And I also agree that they go with everything.

heroutdoors · 26/04/2012 19:58

Yes, thrifty there are pearls and then there are ..pearls. The price difference is enormous.
As Fanny was thinking /asking: natural is better than cultured, but cultured is better than freshwater.
A smooth natural pearl is unaffordable for us ordinary mortals. A cultured pearl is also smooth but it is from a farmed oyster rather than wild- which is the natural one.
The fresh water ones have lumps and bumps but that does not mean they are less attractive. The " designer " name for them is Baroque.
Good luck.

UML · 26/04/2012 19:59

Yes, there is a lot of variation in prices - depends on a few things...

If you buy from a retail outlet, they are overpriced naturally, or not the "best quality" (which probably only an expert would notice anyway!)

But, if you are looking for a hand-it-down type set, or just to feel good about buying a really good quality item, it is good to go to jewellery stores that specialise in pearls, they will give you more information, like the rating of the pearl (which varies) and give you a large choice of sizes and styles.

I have bought from www.pearlgallery.co.uk/ they give you a lot of info, and let you pick something suitable for your budget and preference.
