shortening thin gold bracelet

I have a thin gold chain bracelet (it has a few tiny diamond stations on it, looks a bit like the tiffany by the yard) which has always been too large to wear without the risk of possibly slipping off (am v.short, have v.small hands etc). I want to start actually dressing up a bit, so will get it shortened. I will take it in to a local family jewellers and wonder how much it might cost (and whether this is possible). Ideally I would like to have it done on the spot. If they do it well I might well get lots of other stuff done.
