Evening coats? Do they exist . . .

I have a dress for a wedding which I am really happy with however my have started to panic me though with their "cold weather" options they have at the ready. My dress is nice on its own and I think might lose some of the interest if I stick a jacket over it so I thought about seeking a posher going out coat so that if the weather is rubbish I can stick something nice over then when we get inside the dress is as I originally intended. The trouble is - most coats seem quite winter like or macs and wanted something more dressy? Am I completely unrealistic?

link the dress? when is the wedding?

You aren't being unrealistic. Evening coats are a beautiful thing to have in your wardrobe but you may have better luck looking through vintage stores than high street.

Here's a starting suggestion

Ghost make their living kitting people out for weddings. I haven't looked but I'll be amazed if they don't have a velvet something-suitable.

animula · 13/04/2012 23:45

Agree with ujjayi that vintage would be a good hunting ground.

I'm off to a wedding tomorrow. I'm going in a vintage dress + matching evening jacket. I'm not too sure about it, to be honest. The effect is slightly Queen-Mum-Tries-To-Do-Edgy.

Thanks so much for the replies - glad to know I'm not alone.

Wedding is next weekend so have left it all a bit late hoping for early (only) summer weather like last year Blush. I did see a nice one from Ghost on the John Lewis site so I'll have more of a trawl but it was black and I didn't want to look too funerial sp?
Dress is dark purple and wearing a hat so something vintage would be fab - are there any good online stores or am I destined for a real life hunt? Amimula - where did you get your outfit from?

That's a pain about the black. Grrr!

I found my dress here

Sadly, it may not help you unless you're a midlands person but it is the most wonderful place.

EllenRose · 14/04/2012 00:15

Oh looks fab but alas slightly too far away Sad. Will keep looking

I got a black velvet edge to edge coat years ago in Debenhams. It always gets rolled out for 'evening events'. Vintage shops a good hunting ground for similar

LittlePandaBear · 14/04/2012 09:47

Coast have a few evening jackets and coats, usually have more in Winter.

And French Connection usually have some nice sparkly jackets, depends what style you're after!

Bonsoir · 14/04/2012 09:53

Yes, evening coats definitely exist! Best to buy a coat in the same brand as the dress.

LWRF · 14/04/2012 10:08

I have this one in cream
There is still some left in black..Any good??

EllenRose · 14/04/2012 22:02

That one is lovely but sadly I would need a 12 I think. Still torn on whether black is ok but I would probably get more use out of it.
