Help! What can I do to tone down brassy highlights?

And please don't say go back to the hairdresser, I can't afford it and the place that did this to me is 150 miles away!!

Can I use a toner at home? Is there a specific product for this? Or can I just put a darker colour over the top? Or will it react in some spooky way and turn green or something?

Purple shampoo. Leave it on for a few minutes.

AberdeenAgnes · 12/04/2012 19:27

Ooh, thanks misbeehiving. Can I get that in Boots? Is it just called purple shampoo?

Touch of Silver - it's for ladies of more mature years - it'll tone the yellow down

PavlovtheCat · 12/04/2012 19:29

I use John frieda colour correcting, had brassy highlights too. Worked brilliantly, use it twice a week to keep it softened. I was recommended something they sell in boots which is much cheaper that people with grey hair use to get rid if yellow. Can't for the life recall what it's called!

PavlovtheCat · 12/04/2012 19:30

Touch of silver, yes that's it, I heard from many people since that it's bette thn John frieda, so I will buy it next time!

AberdeenAgnes · 12/04/2012 19:43

Oh, thank you so much for this. I am off to Boots tomorrow Grin

I'm sure I read somewhere that ketchup tones down brassiness. Don't try it till you have checked!

TheWisdomOfSolomum · 13/04/2012 01:56

I've read about ketchup too, but I can't remember whether its for brassiness or green tones (caused by swimming etc) so I second don't try it til you check!

TheWisdomOfSolomum · 13/04/2012 01:59

Ok did a quick Google, tomato ketchup is for removing green tinge from blonde hair!

Freshlettice · 13/04/2012 08:45

Also redken do a conditioner for making yellow tones more silver, it's not cheap but lasts for ages and I use the shampoo and then that once a week.

JennyPiccolo · 13/04/2012 14:00

i have the touch of silver one too, make sure to get the conditioner because the shampoo is very drying.
