Chinese dress makers on eBay

Have you ever bought a dress from one? If so how was the sizing, quality etc? I am seeking an evening dress for a summer ball and there are lots of beautiful ones on eBay from Chinese sellers but I am nervous spending approx £100 on something I haven't seen or have experience of. Thanks.

No direct experience but I remember a long thread on handbag.com before it was made rubbish, where people were buying wedding dresses and being thrilled with them

Might be worth a search of their archives?

There was one in particular that a lot of vintage enthusiasts were using to get reproduction dresses and '40s skirt suits made up and they were all thrilled with the results. They were getting them made to measure rather than off the peg. You have to be very precise with your measurements.

My friend has a couple of times and has been really pleased both times. Once was a communion dress and the other was a prom dress.

Oh just remember dc's step mum got her bridesmaid dresses from one and was pleased too.

I got my bridesmaid dresses from lightinthebox.com (£35 each) and they were very good quality. They came up a bit small but my mum was able to make them bigger (she was impressed by the generous seams that allowed for my sister's random weight gain...). Also they had quite big cups in them, which worked well for my busty BM, but might need a little altering for others.

A friend bought her wedding dress from a similar store and the quality was excellent.

Thanks for the comments, I will give it a go and let you know how I get on.

I have a couple of dresses from mainland China...although I did buy them there!!

trixymalixy · 05/04/2012 20:42

A friend had some lovely dresses made by one of the eBay Chinese seamstresses. Think I would be nervous spending £109 though. Hers were only about £50.

British manufacturing needs a bit of help...according to Mary Orangebob anyway...

I bought one off from china for a ball but the quality was awful and i spent almost twice as much getting it altered to how it looked in the picture. Put me off, i stick to uk now where i know i can send it back if i don't like it. In fact looking for one for this year, does anyone know any good uk stockists, looking for a mermaid corset style?
