Where am i going wrong with my nails?

I bought Nail Envy, i bought a Leighton Denny crystal file, i even bought seche vite (no idea).

They are terrible, i now have only 4 nails that havent split, the rest have all split at the top, and are soft and horrible.
I dont know whether to cut them all down to nothing and start again.

Any suggestions?

I use dr lewinns Revitanail as a base coat every single day - nails Re fab with it and weak and flakey without it.

mosschops30...you saved me the trouble of creating a thread. I did the same and my nails have never been worse (and they were bad before)! Finally, at the weekend, I took everything off and since then, they are coming back to their previous ok appearance. Resigned to never having beautiful natural nails but will make do with what I have.
I have come to the conclusion that the main thing your nails need is fresh air and painting expensive chemicals on them is just a waste of money.

Sorry mosschops so busy ranting, I never answered your original question. I would say, cut them down and just leave them to come back to themselves. Cuticle oil is good to put on at night so I'm going back to just that now. Get your hands out in the sun for 10-20 mins each day - Vit D from the sun helps with calcium absorption or something... HTH :)

My nails took a good 2 years after pregnancy to be anywhere near as nice as they were pre-pregnancy. About as long as it took my hair to grow back!

Thanks dingdong did you buy the file and nail envy too

Skin/hair/nail supplements
Cut the split parts down and use cuticle oil every other day
If the splits can all be totally removed by cutting down you could try gel polish so it stays on for 3 weeks and gives them chance to grow?

Back now mosschops...had to work last night. Yes, am devoted groomed thread follower. Some day I'll learn Grin

Mosschops I too fell for the crystal nail file and nail envy (I watch too much qvc). My thumb and index finger nails are terrible, peeling and soft Angry

mosschops30 · 04/04/2012 09:35

How weird, those are the worst for me too. Ive split another one this morning. Im going to cut them all down later and start again.
Not sure whether to continue with the nail envy and crystal file or just go back to ignoring my nails, when they were much better than they are now

You could try rubbing in almond oil or cuticle oil mosschops - that should help improve them

jenny60 · 04/04/2012 17:58

Had the same problem and tried all of the above. Made no difference at all but Nailtiques formula 2+ sorted it all out. It's pricey but worked fast. No more painful splits and peels for me. Nails now nice and strong. Got mine on ebay. (Formula 2 wasn't strong enough for me). Good luck.

Manda91 · 04/04/2012 20:23

Try using a cuticle oil and massaging it over the cuticle and nail.. Works wonders!! And also always file in one direction, don't file with a "sawing" motion, always use base coat under nail varnish. Those tips should all help strengthen your nails back to their original condition :)

rusmum · 04/04/2012 20:37

I will buy the Nail file and NE off u as I love them!! Really sorted my nails out!!just shows how there is no perfect answer to suit everyone x
