Please help me with my Cropped Trouser Anxiety

I just ordered some black cropped trousers from Next for work. I am sick of sodding flares those great bootcut things flapping round my ankles so I wanted something "worky" that was also a bit summery.

These are the ones. The problem is that they aren't all that cropped, are they? They look like a pair of straight-legged trousers that are too short.

I thought I'd order them anyway, and I am bog-standard medium leg length. They look more or less like the ones in the picture, perhaps slightly longer.

I can't quite rid myself of the feeling that they look like I've grown out of my school trousers and my mum won't buy me any more because it's too near the end of term.

Is that how they are supposed to look?

Or should I send them back?

Please help oh wise style gurus of Mumsnet.

Are they cropped only if you are over 6' and ankle flappers if you are more average of height?

Get some Baby Bio and drop it into your coffee.

BonfireOfKleenex · 27/03/2012 16:45

Hmm - does look as though you'd need sandals with heels to get away with it. Can you roll them up a bit?

Steer away from the mum boots.

bumpybecky · 27/03/2012 16:45

Can't answer on the whether the next ones are supposed to look like that or not, but if it helps M&S have got some linen rich (or maybe line blend) cropped trousers that are very slim and come in loads of colours...

www.marksandspencer.com/Linen-Blend-Front-Cropped-Trousers/dp/B0049WNI6S?_encoding=UTF8&mnSBrand=core

I'm not sure if I'm keeping them though as I think I'd prefer wider ones! and they're a bit scratchy, although I think they'll probably soften up

bumpybecky · 27/03/2012 16:46

working link well maybe anyway...

FauxFox · 27/03/2012 16:51

FauxFox · 27/03/2012 16:55

Oh my good god becky those are some of the most awful trousers I have ever seen! Send them back quick!!

I was mystified by the high star rating until I discovered most of the reviewers were 65+ years old...sorry.

Catsmamma · 27/03/2012 16:57

you were done over, next have made a whole lot of too short trousers and they are trying to flog them as cropped!

send them back!!

beachyhead · 27/03/2012 17:02

I think the Next ones are better than the M&S ones, which are not nice.....but neither are Audrey, are they?

Will watch and learn!

LargeGlassofRed · 27/03/2012 17:05

Bought my mum the M and S ones for mothers day she loves them, but she is 69.

MsNorbury · 27/03/2012 17:06

like she is wearing them
or with flats

FauxFox · 27/03/2012 17:06

My most audrey-esque ones are H&M but last year so not sure if they are still in...

bumpybecky · 27/03/2012 17:20

well that's decided it then! Grin anyone seen anything aimed at the under 65+ market then? other than the outgrown next ones

I'm looking for cropped trousers that are smart enough for work. I've not had the job long (SAHM for 7 years) so have no smart summer clothes. Must be online as I'm not dragging 4 dc round the shops.

FauxFox · 27/03/2012 17:26

oasis? They look pretty good to me Smile

BalloonSlayer · 27/03/2012 17:26

Oh dear.

Looks like they are going back then. Although maybe if I'd ordered "short" they'd have been OK.

Love that length

MsNorbury · 27/03/2012 17:28

the gap ones? £45 are my faves
black

BalloonSlayer · 27/03/2012 17:34

Ooh the Oasis ones are nice!

Except they only have an 8

That's the thing about Next - at least I know what size will fit me.

(Marks is a nightmare. I tried 2 pairs of size 10 trousers on and one was far too loose and the other far too tight. I said to the changing room lady that M&S really ought to do something about its sizing, that there shouldn't be such a difference in size between two pairs of trousers that are both supposed to be a size 10. She looked at me as if I had two heads and said "Well they'll have come from different suppliers. You need to try them on." like I was an idiot. I mean - it's only been the last decade or so that you have been able to try anything on in Marks; it's "big thing" was always that you couldn't try anything on! And I cannot possibly believe that a company with that much purchasing clout can't tell all its suppliers: right THIS is the exact sizing we want and you'd better stick to it or we find someone else. Or measure the clothes when they arrive and put appropriate size labels in them. So that's why I won't buy M&S clothes online. Rant over)

OP posts:
FauxFox · 27/03/2012 17:43

oasis on their site - slightly different but still a good length and available in all sizes...not sure about the belt...

MsNorbury · 27/03/2012 19:30

try JL for oasis stuff

MadAboutHotChoc · 27/03/2012 19:43

Try the petite range.

H&M have come cropped trousers in as well.

bigTillyMint · 27/03/2012 19:53

I have some black cropped trousers from Gap (Wink MsNorbury) which are fab, but they are shorter on me than the ones in your link. Could you take them up?

MsNorbury · 27/03/2012 22:52

I'll look. Remind me if I forget. Are great for le soir too.
