What can I do about my nails?

I bit my nails when I was younger. I don't do it so much these days but the nail bed is so knackered from years of abuse it stops really low IYKWIM? So when they do grow by the time they reach the top of my finger there's about half an inch of white. My nails are so weak that they just peel off and they always look a mess because I just can't leave them alone.

I'm considering having something done but don't know what. I had acrylic tips put on once about 10 years ago and they looked awful and made them even worse.

Are there any other options? A a nail neglector, even if I went to a nail bar (is that the word?) I'd not have a clue of what to ask for.

Thanks

My nails split badly & I've started using one of the Sally Hanson products to strengthen them. It seems to be working (although I don't always put it on everyday & let it build up like you should!). I got the stuff to strengthen rather than the one that helps them grow (not sure if there's much difference in the different products). There might be something better than SH stuff but if there is, I don't know of it! Also getting a nail buffer to buff & shine your nails would be a good idea.
