Shopping in New York

Anyone who's been, can you suggest what's cheaper to buy in NYC? I know Abercrombie stuff is meant to be cheaper in the USA, and remember hearing vague whisperings about levis when I was younger... anything else notable? Converse? Cosmetics?

I haven't been for a few years but jeans are definitely cheaper. As Frankie says, any American brands are cheaper. Have fun. New York is shopping heaven!

Luxury brand jeans definitely cheaper, a lot cheaper! banana republic and anthropologie too. Oh definitely check out club Monaco, that's not in the uk yet is it? Good quality but high st prices type brand.

UGGs are way cheaper. Got my mum a pair in Boston for $140.

Cosmetics are a great idea, the big Dept stores do great deals and throw in loads of goodies.

Gap works out the same when you factor the tax.

Apple stuff loads cheaper.

That reminds me, the ticket prices do not include state tax. It gets added at the till so bargainous items may not be so.

Looks like it's 8.75% so you need to remember to add that before deciding to buy.

Oooh and if you're flying BA T5 has Kurt Geiger and Ted Baker tax free.

Yes only buy GAP if its somethign not stocked in the UK, otherwie wasting valuable luggage space.

The usual suspects as in Hollister, Abercrombie, any US based designer DKNY, etc.
Marc Jacobs is cheaper as well (i brought a lovely handbag not too fussy, think it was called Stella).

Checkout any outlet stores, tj maxx is great for some excellent bargains especially if you are standard sizing and they have some great accessories.

If you are planning on shopping heavily, then pack minimally as they can be quite strict on luggage allowances and wanting to check lugagge on people travelling back. I was advised to remove tags and packaging incase i got stopped at customs as the allowance in $ is ridiculously small.

Went in October - my GAP jeans were more expensive when Sales Tax was added. But I did buy them because Gap doesn't stock the longer length that I was after in the UK.

Bobbi Brown was 'slightly' cheaper, not massively though.

The Sales were INCREDIBLE. Got some Bannana Republic sweaters for £15. It wasn't worth it for the non-sale items.

Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein were bargainous (especially in Macy's sales racks) and got some bargains (again in Macy's) on Tommy Hilfiger men's tops.

Woodberry Common (designer outlet village, about an hour from NY) is fab.

Filene's Basement was brilliant for shoes.

If you are shopping in any of the big department stores (macy's, bloomingdales etc) youncan go to customer services with your passport and get a tax relief type card that allows you to not pay state tax on your purchases. I lived in New York for 3 years and always did this.

What about when you fly back home then - do you get hit with taxes then????

So excited I have lost the ability to spell, apparently.

We went last August when we got 1.56 dollars to the pound. Abercrombie/holister weren't hugely cheaper. Some gap kids was actually more expensive. Clinique was a lot cheaper at the airport.toys r us and Disney much cheaper . I got lalaloopsies for £15 .the exchange rate has to nudge 1.80 to the pound to make anything cheaper.
