OCM - Not that good for your skin then......

I have used the oil cleansing method on and off but have recently stopped as I got fed up with the oil getting in my hair. It did not change my skin however as it is already quite good so was not expecting to see any difference.
I have however just read this
www.cosmeticscop.com/the-oil-cleansing-method-for-oily-skin.aspx
and I completely agree with it, especially about steamimg your face. I love this web site as it gives unbiased reviews on just about anything and I find myself spending hours reading them!!!
So, no more ocm for me....clinque comforting cleanser seems to be one of the most highly rated cleansers so I am now off to the Clinique counter!!!

Yeah but no but.... Wink

I hated castor oil but using just almond oil has really sorted out my skin. I would never use Clinique on my face - so harsh!

valiumredhead · 20/03/2012 11:50

And if you got it in your hair OP it sounds like you must've been bathing in the stuff!

HettyKett · 20/03/2012 11:51

Mmm, not sure I'd trust a cosmetics retailer on this. Hardly an unbiased source.

May well be fab for cosmetics / product comparisons though.

ZZMum · 20/03/2012 11:51

well I would disagree with a lot of the statements that the site makes - very sweeping generalisations - how can water soluble cleanser dissolve oil? Steaming has been used for years in beauty professions and am sure if it caused the damage claimed here it would be out of vogue -and plenty of people have seen great benefit to OCM so the final statement of "To be fair, experimenting with the oil-cleansing method (minus the steaming) won't hurt your skin. At worst, it will just waste your time and exacerbate breakouts" is clearly not true

As ever, there is no absolute answer otherwise there would be one skin care solution - bit like diets.. there are so many so you can find which one suits you ..

ZZMum · 20/03/2012 11:53

and totally support HettyKett view - she is hardly likely to endorse a product she can not sell for inflated prices!

salamanda · 20/03/2012 11:55

I find almond oil great as a 'night cream' after cleansing (I have v dry skin), but I tried the OCM method for a few days using it an now have a HUGE spot on my chin. It may not be the OCM method that caused it but my usual cleanser keeps zits away perfectly so I will be going back to that.

Used to use Eve Lom cleanser which I suppose works on similar principles to OCM, and it made my skin perfect. Such a faff though and so expensive!

salamanda · 20/03/2012 11:56

*and, not an

valiumredhead · 20/03/2012 11:57

You would have to use boiling water on your face for it to leave you with broken cappileries - tbh I think the article is a load of bollox Grin

valiumredhead · 20/03/2012 11:58

sal castor oil ruined my face for a week after using it ONCE - very harsh and drying. I just use plain almond oil and my skin has been amazing since I started using it.

Pepa · 20/03/2012 12:01

FWIW - I did try OCM last year and it destroyed my skin....I may be the only one on Mumsnet who this happened to but there you go :(

I had some adult acne at the time and OCM seemed to not only cause that to dramtically worsen but it also caused my skin to become extremely sensitive and patches of dermatitis to appear on my eyelids and around my mouth. It has taken nearly 9 months to get it back to some kind of normal and yet still way worse than when I started OCM :( I was very careful when I did OCM only using Jojoba oil with a smidge of castor but still disaster...

IsabelleRinging · 20/03/2012 12:03

Paula Begeon is FAB!!!! I use her products www.paulaschoice.co.uk and they are brilliant, everything she say's is true.

IsabelleRinging · 20/03/2012 12:05

Of course water soluable cleanser can remove oil- look at fairy liquid!

LumpyLatimer · 20/03/2012 12:11

I've been doing OCM method for 2 weeks now and could WEEP at how lovely my skin is after years of crap-faced hurt Grin

Whatever were you doing to get it in your hair Confused

As an aside: OCM has inspired me to ditch the chemicals and pre-packaged retaily stuff altogether - I'm also now going all herbal on my hair with some Ayurvedic stuff. Did wonder about starting a thread for anyone wanting to join me with returning to cavewoman beauty techniques but am afraid of rejection Grin

valiumredhead · 20/03/2012 12:12

lumpy I also tried to go natural with my hair but have had TERRIBLE hair after using silicone and free from shampoos - it seems my hair needs silicone Grin

NanAstley · 20/03/2012 12:13

I have no opinion on the linked article, but from personal experience, OCM is not the Holy Grail it is touted to be. It totally destroyed my skin when I tried it last year. I have normal skin with an oily T-zone, and only got spots when I was close to getting my periods. 3 weeks on the OCM and my skin broke out in a mass of spots. Not tiny ones either...massive angry spots with about a ton of pus in each one. I still bear the scars of some of the bigger ones Sad

Never again! I use cleansers from the Simple range, and I will never again stray

valiumredhead · 20/03/2012 12:14

Those that didn't get on with it - were you using castor oil? I only used a tiny amount and it was hideous!

LumpyLatimer · 20/03/2012 12:15

Ooo Valium that's itneresting. I'm actually going really properly cavewoman and using some Indian techniques - amla oil, cassia, rhubarb powder, shikakai etc. This was after an encoutner with henna that magically transformed my crappity broken fuzzy locks into thick tumbling curls - kind of got me thinking about herbs generally.

I will report back when I've used some and we'll see if my hair basically just falls out

NanAstley · 20/03/2012 12:15

I was using olive oil to start with, then switched to almond oil. Neither worked.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 20/03/2012 12:15

Lumpy start the thread I will join you, I am slowly, slowly heading that way, could do with inspiration.

Abra1d · 20/03/2012 12:15

I just clean my face with extra virgin olive oil and a warm flannel. I don't suffer any of the breakouts that pretty well all other commercial cleansers give me. Even if they are marketed as suitable for very sensitive skin.

I also use olive oil as a conditioner. I apply it to the ends of my hair before I shampoo and let it soak in for five minutes. Then wash it out. It works well.

LumpyLatimer · 20/03/2012 12:20

Righto WWWTA - I shall do it now

I have Form for this sort of thing (under Other Names) Grin

gimme a sec

snowmummy · 20/03/2012 12:23

I suppose all things will not work for all people. OCM seems to work for me. I've been using it again for about 3 weeks and it is a faff but my skin is much better.

PerryCombover · 20/03/2012 12:27

I tried with the lack of silicone hair stuff and it turns out that my hair is straw wire wool without its addition

valiumredhead · 20/03/2012 12:30

Yes mine too - complete straw city! Grin I gave it a good month and I have the WORST hair ever. Gave in yesterday and I woke up this morning and it looked like my hair again !
