OCM - Not that good for your skin then......

I have used the oil cleansing method on and off but have recently stopped as I got fed up with the oil getting in my hair. It did not change my skin however as it is already quite good so was not expecting to see any difference.
I have however just read this
www.cosmeticscop.com/the-oil-cleansing-method-for-oily-skin.aspx
and I completely agree with it, especially about steamimg your face. I love this web site as it gives unbiased reviews on just about anything and I find myself spending hours reading them!!!
So, no more ocm for me....clinque comforting cleanser seems to be one of the most highly rated cleansers so I am now off to the Clinique counter!!!

I didn't use caster oil for OCM, I used almond oil, and it still didn't work - huge hideous spots, really sensitive dry red patch on one cheek. I may have similar skin to you Nan, Simple cleaners work perfectly for me.

valiumredhead · 20/03/2012 13:13

How funny, Simple burns my face. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

UmYeahLikeTotally · 20/03/2012 13:22

I was going to start the OCM this weekend but reading these horror stories are scaring me; I really don't want a mega spotty face!

I suppose the only way to find out if it is good or bad for you is to try it...

LumpyLatimer · 20/03/2012 13:24

Yes Simple is no good for me either - but then pretty much everything except the soft kiss of a gentle flower fairy ruins my skin Sad

Don't be scared UmYEah - nothing but nothing could be as bad as Clinique's paint stripper

pinkhebe · 20/03/2012 13:24

my skin is still terrible 6 months after trying ocm Sad I did use 5% caster oil but the spots I had (still have the remains) were huge and lasted months.

fayeso · 20/03/2012 13:58

So we have mixed views on this.....I personally did not have a problem with the ocm but do not like steamimg my face regularly for fear of thread veins etc etc....I do like the cosmeticop sight and it does recommend and review lots of different brands-some expensive some not, and it does find good and not so good products in each particular brand so do not feel it is particularly biased towards one.
I do think we all think of so called natural products as being better....when infact if you read the controls and regulations rules they are quite lax and can still lead to 'natural' claims being misleading.I liked the part of this website that talks about mineral make up.
So my face is not going to see oil for a while, (even though as I said before I have not had a problem). Enough people have had serious reactions by the sound of it and that is enough evidence for me to believe the info on ocm is partly if not completely believable.

OCM made my skin shit Sad

I also tried using sls free paraben free silicone free all natural shampoos etc and both dd and I got awful crusty scalp psoriasis. I think we need the chemicals!

valiumredhead · 20/03/2012 14:46

YY freak I have crust cradle cap type flakes YUCK!

valiumredhead · 20/03/2012 14:47

In just one patch oddly though - rest of scalp fine bit shit straw hair Confused

HipHopOpotomus · 20/03/2012 14:54

OCM works brilliantly for me. I have fair skin, classic t-zone combination skin. I use grape seed oil with about 20% caster oil & a hot flannel.

formerdiva · 20/03/2012 19:42

I've been using OCM for 2 weeks now, 50% castor oil and 50% avocado oil. I haven't had a single new spot in 2 weeks, which is possibly the first time I can say that since I turned 11. Clearly doesn't work for everyone, but it's doing the job for me!

It just goes to show how different we all are. OCM has transformed my eczema on my face and zapped my t zone into loveliness. Simple made my skin fall off and I had to hide for a month.
Make sure the co used is cold pressed and organic and only a smidgen is needed and maybe only twice a week.
I also found that you need a good amount of oil whilst massaging or you can chafe your face iykwim

PerryCombover · 21/03/2012 12:31

my life changing product was gylcolic acid 10%
completely changed my skin miles miles better

i've started ocm now and will report back

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 21/03/2012 13:35

I love OCM. My skin is awful without it and argan oil has transformed my hair.

ZZMum · 21/03/2012 22:01

washing up liquid does not dissolve oil - it disperses it which is totally different process - hence my issue with the article.. no science.. just generalisations

lurkingaround · 21/03/2012 22:18

Doesn't washing up liquid mix with both oil and water and therefore the oil can be rinsed away with water? Isn't that how we all clean our dishes? I don't think the article is all generalisations. I think it makes a lot of sense.

IsabelleRinging · 21/03/2012 23:03

Disperses? dissolves? whatever? it removes oil from the dishes! Detergent removes oil from skin. You wouldn't try to cleanse your hair in oil, or wash your roasting tin in oil would you, why not? because you would always be left with an oily residue. Most skin probably copes well with the oil and it won't do any damage, but for many it will further clog pores.

Oil on the skin may mix with whatever oil you add to it and it can then be wiped away. However, oil can't be dissolved in water so there will always be some of the oil left on the surface.

I challenge you to cleanse your face with oil when you have been wearing quite heavy foundation, then use a toner on a cotton pad, the cotton pad will appear orange because of the make up left on the surface. Compare this with cleansing with a really good detergent based cleanser from Paula's choice and you will see no makeup on your cotton pad.

MrFluffy · 21/03/2012 23:08

Abra I use olive oil on my hair too, it's growing gloriously thick now.

Abra1d · 22/03/2012 10:47

I've been stunned by how well it works MrF. And I get less residue sticking to my hair than I do with normal conditioners. Plus it's cheap.

You're not a cute long-haired guinea pig or hamster, though, are you? Or a glamorous Afghan Hound? Wink Any other tips?

Rainydayagain · 22/03/2012 12:17

OCM also made my skin crap- I never ever get spots but it made me looks like I had acne, I tried different variations with different oils but nothing worked. My skin is really dry so I was hoping using oil would sort it out, back to the drawing board I guess!
