how short is too short?

I was wearing a dress similar to this at the weekend. It's probably a couple of inches shorter on me. My jealous, bitter Mum told me it was too short. I'm 35 size 14 tall hourglass with good legs. Mumsnet jury, was my dress too short?

I thought you were going to link some arse-skimming monstrosity. That is definitely not too short Smile

salamanda · 20/03/2012 12:43

No, no way is that dress too short. Go shorter next time, just to annoy her. You have the legs for it Grin

moogalicious · 20/03/2012 12:45

eh? Your mum's jealous, bet the dress looked fab!

bigTillyMint · 20/03/2012 12:46

That's not a short dress- you will look great in it!

I bet your mother is like mine, who told me that I should have my hair cut short when I turned 40 as it was unbecoming on older women. Needless to say, it is still long (shorter than it was, but still just past shoulder length) and I am now approaching 50.

Is she not wanting to be outdone by you, or just an old soak?Grin

alwayswashingup · 20/03/2012 12:47

Definately not too short, it's lovely.

Haziedoll · 20/03/2012 12:49

Boden don't do short.

I would call that midlength, your mum has odd ideas.

AgeingFop · 20/03/2012 13:24

Grin to salamanda. Reminds me of how my DW would behave when her Mother would make comments on what she was wearing - which was quite regularly and done in a "judgey" way. DW deliberately picked the outfit that would most likely annoy her the next few times we visited. Suffice it to say, her Mother no longer criticises DW's fashion choices.

And, No, that dress is hardly short.

The5thFishy · 20/03/2012 13:32

My mum always wore the shortest skirts possible in her youth. My legs are good but she still has those gazelle type perfect skinny legs so told me I had fat legs when I was a teenager, 5foot8 tall weighing 9 stone. Why do her comments get to me though?

Ephiny · 20/03/2012 13:35

Looks fine to me, even if you're tall it's probably only a bit above the knee.

Ignore your mum, you're old enough to wear what you like without needing her approval!

gilmoregirl · 20/03/2012 13:47

I would not consider that to be a short dress by any means.

I am 38, 5'9" and 11 stone and would wear dresses far shorter than that.

YOu must be a v slim size 14 as I manage to sqeeze myself into a 12 and I have two stone on you Smile

The5thFishy · 20/03/2012 13:49

That was when I was a teenager, definitely not 9 stone now!

fishie · 20/03/2012 14:31

i fully intend to continue to wear the tiniest skirts possible until I die. possibly not with bare legs though.

The5thFishy · 20/03/2012 15:02

This was with 60 denier opaques and a slip.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 20/03/2012 15:06

I am (slightly) older than you, 5' 10" and today I am wearing this with thick tights Grin

There is no way that dress is too short.

The5thFishy · 20/03/2012 15:10

So my Mum is just jealous? Whose attentions is she trying to compete with me to get? She's been married 40 years, I've been married 10.

OP posts:
EnjoyResponsibly · 20/03/2012 15:18

Nope. I'm 43 and wearing this

www.coast-stores.com/jody%20dress/dresses/Coast/fcp-product/2224771080

Admittedly with opaques and boots, but still Grin

salamanda · 20/03/2012 15:21

Whose attention? Everyones? Or maybe just your dad's? Maybe you make her feel old and unattractive by comparison so she's trying to make herself feel better by sniping at you. You could try killing her with kindness and be full of compliments for her. Or you could just piss her off more with ever shorter skirts.

salamanda · 20/03/2012 15:25

My grandma's reason for living appears to be to put down all the women in her family (we can do no right in her eyes - clothes, weight, jobs, parenting skills) and to sing the praises of all the men no matter how shit they are. I have never understood it, it's like despite loving us she can't help what comes out of her mouth.
