Disclaimer: I have not been to the opera in Rome and therefore know sweet Fanny Adams about it but I thought you could do with an answer no matter how useless it may be.

However I have been twice over here because I am dead cultured an dat, once to the Royal Opera House and once to the Albert Hall - I expected everyone to be well poshed up, however the punters' dress ran the gamut from Toff Evening/Cocktail wear to Boho Hobo to American Tourist so if it's anything like here you can wear what you like. I wore an LK Bennett black dress first time and a dull silver sequinned skirt and little cardigan second time around and I felt as though I fitted in reasonably well and didn't get slung out for being a working class northern oik.

I'd go for semi-smart evening-ish, so maybe black evening trousers with a nice top and a cardigan incase it's chilly.

I suspect msarsebiscuit is correct about the range of clothing you will see, Americans seem to think white baggy shorts are perfect for all vacation occasions including 3* meals and evening opera, but there you go, it must be something genetic!

I've only been to the opera once in Rome, it was an outdoor performance of La Traviata and most of the Italians were wearing something similar to my first paragraph. I was wearing a Missoni day-dress but didn't feel out of place.

Enjoy Rome, I am very jealous!
