daytime do, must look good

in a couple of weeks time I'm attending a daytime get together at a friend's house. For reasons I don't want to go into I need to look good. I don't want to look like I've tried too hard and stick out like a sore thumb, it's not a night out after all so heels and sparkles are a no go. But neither do I want to end up looking like I'm slobbing round the house on a saturday afternoon - jeans and tshirt style.

if I wear a dress I'll probably look overdressed, jeans and trousers tend to accentuate my enormous thighs, skirts work but only if they're A-line, so what do I wear? I'm happy to get something new but no idea what. I'm a size 14 so can't just throw on any old thing and look fabulous.

please help!

I'd go with a casual dress - jersey is ok for daytime.

Boden? (25% off til 19th)
this one in green would skim over your hips.
Or this one in brown with a necklace & cardigan, or one of the print ones?

I have this in a different colour from last autumn and it is really easy just to throw on - I wear mine to work but would wear it to daytime stuff too.

This tea dress from Next is empire line so again smooths over bigger thighs (I am a real pear)

I like this tea dress too Geri for Next.

If all this is completely off the mark - then I also like looking at this girl's blog for when I need to get away from rural North Yorkshire - she is very "London" and " on trend" - the outfits she puts together for work could inspire you?

and it would help if I had put the link in Blush

I like what WIT says here:

I like to think I don?t have a bad clothes day but you tell me! I?ve developed a wardrobe of safe go-tos, classic combinations that are universally approved by just about everyone. A great pair of jeans with a stripy top will always work. And you should always have a great t-shirt, it?s a summer essential.

With that in mind if a dress seems too dresssy for you -- what about a good pair of jeans & stripy tee & a great blazer?

I'm a dress kind of person and as a pear I am loving this one

www.thewhitecompany.com/clothing/dresses-and-tunics/short-sleeved-jersey-twist-graphite-empire-dress/

from white company which also comes in black and in long sleeves.

thanks for replies! I love dresses and have a few jersey ones but, I dunno, sometimes I feel like I'm "showing off" ... does anyone else feel like that or is it just me? Blush

I adore the white company dress but am really conscious of my flappy bingos - mind you, it's still chilly and I could easily get away with wearing a little cardi all day.

Great blog chocolateteabag
