What happened to 100% cotton?

Just got my new summer Next catalogue and the majority of the clothes are either 100% viscose or polyester. What happened to cool cotton for summer?

I dislike this too. Just plain old cotton please!

Hopefully · 12/03/2012 16:34

And wtf is with all the 'ponte'? Just call it 'synthetic sweaty crap' and be done with it.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 12/03/2012 16:35

The cotton crop got ruined and now cotton is super expensive, hence all the man mades around.

As weather systems change, this is likely to be the trend of the future as cotton will be harder and harder to grow.

Who thought fashion would be a victim of global warming eh?

alemci · 12/03/2012 16:50

I hate manmade and Viscose makes me sweaty. you need cotton in the Summer. also so many cardis are acrylic.

drywhiteplease · 12/03/2012 18:00

Ohh at last people who understand me!

I ESP hate acrylic! It is practically impossible to but any knitwear without it in! Drives me bonkers! I have occasionally succumbed because I like a style or it's the only thing on offer (even in more expensive shops ) and always regret it because it bobbles like mad and ends up looking like a rag. What happened to lovely washable merino wool? Only place I can find ungranny styles in 100% wool is uniqlo,Boden and occasionally Bennetton.

Sooooo agree about cotton.

< gets off soap box>

hattymattie · 12/03/2012 18:04

Gosh - didn't know it was related to the cotton crop - I loath viscose with a passion it washes badly and is impossible to iron. I too love pure wool and have been lurking in uniqlo over the winter.

LtheWife · 12/03/2012 18:04

I really don't understand all the viscose (rayon) hate. It seems most people lump it in the same category as polyester or acrylic but it's so so different. Yes, it's a man made fabric, but it's not a synthetic. It's made from a natural material (wood pulp), it's not a plastic! Viscose is actually a great summer fabric, it's as breathable as cotton and actually more absorbent so has amazing wicking properties which make it cooler to wear than cotton.

iseenodust · 12/03/2012 18:07

Cotton, just cotton please.

anniewoo · 12/03/2012 18:12

A lot of Next clothes and shoes are looking cheap and nasty

hazchem · 12/03/2012 18:30

I noticed this in Zara too. Lots and lots of synthetic tops which is a shame as OH seamed in the mood to spend :o

otchayaniye · 12/03/2012 20:26

Commodity prices have boomed across the board and cotton and wool have more than tripled in price. Try finding 100 pct wool in winter, too.

drywhiteplease · 12/03/2012 21:08

Viscose may be a breathable "natural" fibre but it still looks tatty after a few washes

alemci · 13/03/2012 17:47

i have pyjamas in viscose and they make me all sweaty. I may have the odd top in this fabric as well give me cotton any day.

startail · 13/03/2012 18:03

I noticed this in the Next catalogue yesterday too. Fortunately most of the clothes are hideous anyway. Not even anything much for either DD. Not even the suite anything 11 year-old.

I agree that good viscose can feel nice, although not quite as cool as cotton.

However it is very variable and impossible to buy on the Web because it can go from feeling like cotton to feeling like the worst polyester and there is no way of telling from a picture.

Also it does not necessarily wash as well as cotton. The polyester viscose top I am wearing has gone bobbly very quickly.

waxlyrical · 13/03/2012 20:57

Hardly any leather shoes anymore either - although price of the synthetic ones is creeping up as they become the norm. horrible sweaty things!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/03/2012 21:25

Viscose can feel nice, yes: for example, I have a couple of White Company dresses which wash beautifully and feel gorgeous - but viscose makes me sweaty. Totally disagree that it is cooler to wear than cotton.

Acryllic is vile - you can almost hear the static when walking around the M&S knitwear dept nowadays.

And as for polyester...

I am finding it virtually impossible to buy affordable clothes in fabrics I am actually willing to wear now.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 13/03/2012 21:27

Next is vile though and has been for years. It could all be cotton but it would still all be hideous.

drywhiteplease · 14/03/2012 08:25

I have just boil washed new next jeans in the hope that they might fit as they did in the first five minutes I wore them.lost shape v quickly

anniewoo · 14/03/2012 15:53

Next shoes look so plasticy.
