Has anyone really changed their shape by doing Callanetics? Sounds too good to be true.

Because I've bought the DVD because I'm ever hopeful!

I can't complain about my weight, BMI is and has nearly always been 22 and although I'd like to be thinner I realise that with my big bone structure it's never really going to happen. But I reckon that with the right kind of exercise I might be able to change my shape a bit (thinner thighs and flatter tummy would be good).

My youngest is now old enough that I should have long ago done something about the tummy - it's not huge but as I'm flat chested I feel a flat tummy would enhance my whole figure.

So has anyone done Callanetics and is it as effective as it claims to be? Or can you recommend any other good exercise for reshaping?

Thanks

I'll have a look on YouTube. I'm on Cambridge - I need the accountability of seeing someone every week! 22lb down, 32 to go. Was hoping to lose it all by new years but I'll prob be early next year now..although would be good if this helps!

TheFabulist · 09/11/2018 21:47

Flipping heck 22 lbs! I've lost 15... Well done and yes, Callanetics will make a huge visual difference without stressing your body too much!

GhostCurry · 10/11/2018 14:46

Sooooo how soon can I hope to see any results? Is two weeks unrealistic? Grin

CremeDeSudo · 10/11/2018 16:35

22lb in just under 2 months and have been on holiday for a week during that time too so pretty pleased!

I started scanning through the thread and it says we only have to do it two or three times a week? Suits me!

LucySera90 · 06/01/2021 09:16

Sorry to reinvigorate this thread but I was wondering if anyone is still doing callanetics here?

I am planning to start today - I've just signed up for the free trial on CallaneticsTV. The only thing is that there are so many different videos/programmes that I'm not sure which to start with! I'm thinking maybe the 10 hours one?

waltzingparrot · 06/01/2021 13:18

Callanetics - there's a word I've not heard since the 1980s 😁

MsMoppet · 25/04/2021 09:16

Hi @LucySera90
I started a couple of weeks ago but I've only done 2.5hrs (30mins at a time). I haven't seen a difference but I haven't been doing it enough.
How have you got on, do you look 10yrs younger?!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 25/04/2021 12:56

@LucySera90 I've just signed up for Callanetics TV too, and plan to start with the 30 days programme. I tend to exercise first thing in the morning, and none of the workouts look too long (I have 30 minutes to exercise). I used to do Callanetics back in the 80s, and have done bits on and off since then.

MrsFionaCharming · 25/04/2021 13:17

Can anyone recommend some good YouTube videos? I’d rather not pay until I know it’s something I’ll actually follow.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 25/04/2021 14:05

@MrsFionaCharming - there's a 7 day free trial. I couldn't find much on YouTube, but other posters might have found something.

LadyHawke66 · 09/05/2021 19:24

Good morning everyone, I'm new here and happy to have found this place. I used to do Callenetics in the 80s and recently bought a DVD to start again. Decided that will be starting this week, so hoping for some encouragement and motivation.

bingowingsmcgee · 09/05/2021 19:36

I just got the DVD today, looking forward to it! Used to do it donkeys years ago

OrchidLass · 09/05/2021 21:06

OMG I did callanetics back in the late 80s and thought it was a piece of piss. Then discovered the next day that I could barely move. It exercises the muscles that you don't know you have and it really is quite amazing!

Iceniii · 10/05/2021 17:42

I bought the book but it's a bit confusing and old! Not sure how to start!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 10/05/2021 18:47

@Iceniii you definitely need to see the exercises! The DVDs are on Amazon I think.

Iceniii · 10/05/2021 20:00

There's some big claims in there!

Iceniii · 10/05/2021 20:34

Downloaded it on Amazon. Not convinced! But I'll give it a go tomorrow. DH thought it was creapy, especially the pelvic thrust ones.

Iceniii · 11/05/2021 19:57

Well I did the first session! Are these exercises still advised? Really hurts my neck and not convinced the leg ones will do anything for legs?

XingMing · 11/05/2021 21:26

It was a very effective workout that did the business quickly, and it is directly linked to anything you do at ballet, barre and Pilates or yoga. Almost all the movement and positional stuff is ballet or yoga based. Pilates takes the effective exercises and concentrates/refines them to work on your core strength. Great for improving shapeliness, but you do need some form of aerobic in parallel for stamina.

RobinRN · 31/05/2022 01:59

I did Callanetics 10 years younger last year, about 14 hours and definitely noticed a difference. I felt more pulled in and got my waist back. Then I stopped. Today, I started back up. I’m hoping to get rid of saddlebags which I got a few years after having my son. I tore my abdominal muscles with pregnancy so a little poochy.
im 5’1” 118 lbs and measurements are 28.5” - 29.25”waist hips 33.5” (that’s just around the hip bones, not measuring the widest part around the bum) thigh20”. My biggest issue is I look so jiggly, I’m flabby, all over

severrely · 31/05/2022 07:53

I'm going to give this a go.

Typical "skinny fat"... 5'3 and fluctuate between 8 and 9st which is a size 6 or 8 but every part of me wobbles and any weight I gain goes to my boobs and tummy.

Can't take measurements but I'll find a tight pair of jeans and try to check in weekly Grin

doadeer · 31/05/2022 08:30

How is it different to pilates?

DelphiniumBlue · 31/05/2022 09:15

nethunsreject · 12/03/2012 14:15

I did it and it buggered up my back, despite assurances that it wouldn't! Sorry! It isn't evidence based.
You sound perfect weight - build core stability and toning stuff at the gym maybe?

I did it and it buggered up my knees...anecdotal again, I know.
If you want to tone specific parts quickly, weights is the way to go.

ImAvingOops · 31/05/2022 10:02

I've still got the dvd of the old 80s video. It does work, but my god, the boredom!
I also do Pilates and Callenetics is way harder. But having done callenetics years ago, I still have the residual muscle strength which has really helped with Pilates.
im going to dig out my old dvd because it really is a very good exercise for building strength and tone. It's amazing how these tiny little movements can be do hard. I found it much more effective than the shred and much easier on the joints. Personally, I dislike exercise where you jump around and can feel your insides jiggling about all over the place!

RaeBVR · 24/06/2022 15:29

I am not a mom, but I picked up this thread when doing a search for Callanetics. I've been doing them off-and-on for decades. Learned about them in the late 80s from my mother-in-law who had an amazing body in her mid-forties. When I do them (the original 10 years younger in 10 hours), I have fantastic results - dropping inches immediately from my waist, stomach and hips - even after only 4 or 5 sessions. I sometimes have to skip the pelvic rotations and scoops because of knee pain. This doesn't really change results. I needed motivation to start again because, like others have posted, they get boring. I'm just trying to remember the results so I'll start. Once I get going and see how quickly they work, I won't mind the boredom. I've done them enough that I don't have to use the video so I can at least watch YouTube! Good luck everyone who continues to try these amazing exercises.
