DH has just appeared home to tell me that he has accepted an invitation to a black tie do in two weeks time. I have bugger all to wear and I need help urgently! Not a lot of money to spend, please help!

John Lewis personal shopping service is my saviour for this sort of thing. The shoppers know the stock very well, and I often get stuff which isn't on the floor because they're getting ready to mark it down. If you have a friend who goes to things like these a lot you can borrow a bag/wrap/stole etc.

Moveslikejagger · 08/03/2012 19:15

Isn't a personal shopper expensive though? I could bloody throttle DH for not making an excuse, we're pretty skint at the mo!

Personal shopper in debs etc is free, you just have to book it.

Purplehonesty · 08/03/2012 19:18

What size are you and what styles do
You like and i will have a look for a budget dress online. Do you want black?

Ladymuck · 08/03/2012 19:21

The service is free, you just pay for the clothes. Just give them an idea of the occasion ie black tie/Ascot/wedding/dinner, and budget, and what you're looking for - dress only or everything. You're taken to a spacious changing room where they usually have plenty of accessories/vesttops/wraps etc to help you work out accessories too. You're given mags to flip through and some bottled water, they take a rail, pop onto the floor and bring back suitable outfits.

Ladymuck · 08/03/2012 19:22

And John Lewis don't quibble when you return everything 2 weeks later.

Moveslikejagger · 08/03/2012 19:23

Oooo that sounds fab! I'm 5ft 2, size 12, short blonde hair, pale colouring, brown eyes. Doesn't need to be black, I'm just desperate!

Oh and I have a 40th in April too which is 'dress to impress' though I doubt it will be too dressy, so perhaps something that could be dressed up or down and would do for both?

Very have some nice dresses, TBH and you can pay in 3 interest free payments if you open an account.

Moveslikejagger · 08/03/2012 19:33

Would you always go for full length at a black tie do? I don't exactly frequent these gigs very often! Smile

Second the personal shopper idea plus I get a lot of some dresses from oasis who tend to do a lot of cocktail dresses for around £60 and £30 in the sale. Black tie = below the knee btw just in case they are likely to be fussy, they shouldn't be though!

I am jealous- I love dress shopping! Envy

QueenCadbury · 09/03/2012 09:51

You could try coast as they may have things still in the sale

Moveslikejagger · 10/03/2012 18:49

Hello again, would this be any good? Or do you really think I should go for floor length? I'm crap at this!

I was in ox st yest. I'd look at Ted baker dresses abd FC both at John Lewis.
I've just got the coast sleeveless Olivia for a work do. That's useful.

BearlyThere · 11/03/2012 07:45

Find what you like. Then eBay

BearlyThere · 11/03/2012 07:46

I like that. I'd not do floor length tbh. Unless yts a forces do. But even so. Who says long dresses look nicer.

BearlyThere · 11/03/2012 07:49

If you like straight, the ruffle shoulder thing on dp looked nice. I ordered then changed mind.

McQueasy · 11/03/2012 08:04

coast dress?

McQueasy · 11/03/2012 08:05

more from coast

HandMadeTail · 11/03/2012 08:10

Tk maxx could be worth a try, if there's one near you.

BearlyThere · 11/03/2012 08:11

Don't like the first coast kne. Bit bridesmaids
I'd not get shoulders out unless very sure of who you'll know there etc. also. Do we need one to rewear at other party ?

motn · 11/03/2012 08:36

this happened to me...and no spare cash...

Go to Zara, (could be Dorothy P or anywhere that sells cocktail dresses for around £30)

Pick up every black dress on their rails(even those you don't really think you like) Take them to the changing rooms.
Try every one on.
Invariably the one you thought looked boring will be the one that looks fantastic on you.

Borrow fab earrings, clutch and stole

Moveslikejagger · 11/03/2012 08:45

I do have a DP and a T K Maxx near me I think I'll just have to go in and do as you suggest motn. I like the Coast dresses but I can't affort them tbh. I HATE shopping!!!
