Is it worth going for something critically acclaimed like Liz Earle, or will plain old Nivea do the trick?

For face I use Astral and love it although it's pretty thick and so not for everyone. Have done pricey and budget moisturisers and everything in between and what suits some will not suit others, plus depending on time of year etc. so try lots. I actually think that using sunscreen in the day (whether in addition to or within your moisturiser) is probably more important if I'm honest...

Hi there - yes I mean for the face. I'm guessing Astral is similar to Nivea in consistency. You're right about spf. Is it an any cheaper moisturisers?
