All-round-the-eye eyeliner

How do people manage to do this (eyeliner all round the eye a la Kate Middy and a squillion other celebs) without it looking awful or smudging everywhere?? Do they use a pen type liner?

I use pencil liner on the top line, and smudge it slightly with a black shadow to set it.

With the same brush I take some of the shadow along the lower lash line. I then use pencil liner on the waterline.

For a less harsh look, try dark brown pencils/shadows instead of black.

I do this sometimes but I have big brown eyes, I wouldn't recommend it if you don't.

Black eyeliner is too harsh if your eyelashes/brows are not naturally very dark.

It needs to be all smudgy and pencil not liquid. There's a pen one I got in Boots but I can't remember the make - maybe Rimmel or Maybelline.

Maghribia, you're so right if you don't get this look right or it just doesn't suit you, you end up looking like one of the 'beauty's' in 'The only way is Essex' (not that I ever watch it).

Maghribia · 06/03/2012 23:51

You are spot on there fadinglikeaflower! It's all about learning what suits you. For example I could never get away with bright blue eyeshadow where on someone with the right colouring it would look fab.

I use a liquid liner in a pot (MAC) and apply with Mac slanty pointy brush all around. It sets and doesn't budge. I have deep set eyes and oily skin if I use pencil, shadow or kohl, I've got panda eyes in 20 mins.

Petunia12 · 07/03/2012 20:02

Morde - hope you'll forgive me for not giving the rest - I loved it when you said, "I've got panda eyes in 20 mins." Know what you mean and love it that you've said it! (me? I'm just a coward)

allthequeensmen · 07/03/2012 20:11

eh?

Maraki · 07/03/2012 21:19

I use a pen (artliner by Lancome). It lasts all day, no smudging, but it is a pain to draw a really thin line on the lower lashes. I do a really thick line with a flick on the upper lid, I have really big brown eyes and dark colouring. Kate Middy has been seen buying Artliner before her wedding, so I assume that is what she uses too. I love the look of pencil on lower but I hate panda eyes!

Chicinwellies · 07/03/2012 21:25

I swear by an investment from 2 years ago, my Dior eyeliner brush - its fantastic.

WipsGlitter · 07/03/2012 21:27

But how do you avoid lots of "gunk" in your inner corner?

My grandfather always called that look 'Piss holes in the snow'.....

nursenic · 07/03/2012 21:30

However...saying that I do like to use a dark grey shadow and a dampened eye liner brush. You need a highly pigmented shadow, preferably loose so you can shake a little out to avoid putting the brush into it repeatedly and contaminating it.
I also like the Bobbie Brown gel eyeliner.

drywhiteplease · 07/03/2012 21:39

After years of using eyeliner (electric blue in 80s !!!) I decided to stop pulling and tugging my poor eyes and go for some advice several years ago.I went to Mac counter and was sold a wonderful thin eyeliner brush and an eye shadow called brun ( 1 have v pale blue eyes) I sweep this on top lid and along lower lash line for softer look.you can damp brush for darker line for eve. More subtle than harsher looks I've tried over the years.

Second bobbi brown gel eyeliner. Genius stuff and you can make line as big/small as you want. Also smudgeable. Brilliant.

WipsGlitter · 07/03/2012 22:16

I have the Bobbi Brown black gel but it was too much / goth when I tried it all round the eye. I've v pale skin and blue eyes so might try a consultation at BB and a brown-ish liner.

I have never put liner on my lower lash line or water line - top lash line only for me! I have quite small eyes and I think liner on the bottom would make them look tiny, squinty... and probably a bit like a Panda too! :(

Moln · 07/03/2012 22:26

I use gel eye liner AND I have blue eyes. Other times I use kohl

Though I do have very dark hair and hence eyelashes

I have been without eyeliner for two days now. I'm addicted. Gone cold turkey..
