The Perfect White T-Shirt

18 replies

I am after a replacement for a perfect white t-shirt that I bought a few years ago in Gap. Think it was one of their vintage pima cotton ones which sadly I don't think they've done this season. I want it to wear with coloured skinnies, chinos, cardis and brogues. This is my wish list:

Scoop neck or v-neck, but not too low to show top of BF bra.
Proper t-shirt sleeves - not capped.
Semi-loose fit... def not baggy, but not skin-tight or 'fitted'. Boyfriend fit maybe?
Reasonably thick material, or at least not see-through in any shape or form.
Hip-length, so can be worn with chinos, etc and not look bulky going over a belt, IYKWIM? Doesn't need to be long enough to layer underneath something.
Preferably high street prices.

Whilst I know that American Vintage, J. Crew, James Perse do lovely lovely T's, ideally I don't want to spend more than about £25.

(P.S. I am a 5'6", pretty under-endowed size 8, if that helps?)

Please stylish ladies - share your t-shirt finds with me!

I have heard that Cos do nice white t-shirts. Not seen them in RL, but they look good on the website.

american apparel will have loads

TheOutlawLauraPalmer · 03/03/2012 21:43

American Apparel. They're addictive.

veryconfusedatthemoment · 03/03/2012 21:59

For me v neck short sleeve, all cotton, M&S - can get usually 2 for £10. It goes with everything. I am the Simon Cowell of the white t shirt - have hundreds (well not really but quite a few). I dont like stretch or lycra because they always look dingy really quickly.

Learning2Knit · 03/03/2012 22:06

I could have written your post! However, I got 2 for £10 in M+S yesterday and the seem really nice quality (last year they were a bit thin in my opinion). Scoop neck, short sleeves but as veryconfused said they also have the V neck if you prefer that style.

Great, thanks - will head off to M&S then, like the sound of 2 for £10. Next time I'm in London will check out AA and Cos as well. Love so much of the stuff on the Cos website, would like to check it out in person. If I did take a punt online, does anyone know how the sizing runs?

Just had a quick look at the American Apparel website and whilst I love the choice of colours, the t-shirts seem to have rather odd necklines and sleeve legnths - i.e. quite high necklines (which I don't find as flattering) and longer sleeves than I'd ideally like. Perhaps it's just the pictures on the website? Which ones do you like TheOutlawLauraPalmer?

M&S ones have come up really short in the body of late (I'm 5'5" so not an Amazon type)

I'm buying Sainsburys at the moment .They only last a matter of months for me.I wear white T shirts under my work tunic ,coloured ones any other time.

BearlyThere · 05/03/2012 07:13

Jcrew on net a porter.

Or boden (seriously )

theseventhdwarf · 05/03/2012 07:57

I second COS i got a lovely one there last weekend (am similar size to you)

monkeysmama · 05/03/2012 10:00

How do you wash your white tshirts? Sounds silly but mine always lose the bright whiteness after a few washes.

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 05/03/2012 10:11

petits bateau? Size 8 should be 14 or 16 year old, not sure they have the Vneck this year.

MadAboutHotChoc · 05/03/2012 11:12

monkey - wash whites and coloureds seperately.

Eggrules · 05/03/2012 11:23

I know you said no cap sleeves but I still recommend Dorothy Perkins tee shirts as the best.

My very stylish friend recommended them and I have them in loads of different colours:
The sleeves aren't capped imho;
The length is perfect;
Lovely fit - not too tight nor too baggy;
12 months on and they still wash and look like new;
£5 each or x 2 for £9.

lucidlady · 05/03/2012 11:40

Very surprisingly, I found my perfect white tee (my criteria is the same as yours) in H&M as part of a set which had the white tee and a blue and white striped tee. I was stunned at how good the cotton quality was, AND it was only £6 for the two of them?! Bargainous!!

dairymoo · 07/03/2012 16:37

Thanks all - more to check out. Haven't managed to ge near a shop yet but will do and report back!

Agree with Boden for long sleeve but Sainsburys for short.

And Napisan to keep the whites white!
