Jewellery or bag??

What would YOU call an investment?

My lovely, lovely DH has told me to take some money out of our savings account and to go treat myself Grin. I want to be all sensible and have said that it would be better to add this money to our new kitchen budget (this will happen later in the year). He is very insistent and has said I deserve to be treated.

Now, my dilemma is... Every time I have been treated before, I have gone for diamonds. A little while ago, I got a beautiful diamond bracelet, before this I got earings. I have seen a ring in my price range which is very lovely, but I have three other dress rings - one I got for my 21st, one my grandad gave me which belonged to my grandma (wearing it now) and one which belonged to my other grandma - mum gave me this and I had it fixed and had a stone put back in and I wear this also now and again.

I could get a watch, but I do have a number of watches, non very very expensive, two rather nice rotary ones I got when I was 18 and 21 and two by DKNY and one by Guess.

I am thinking jewellery is a better investment than a bag although I have seen a rather nice Mulberry one.

Do bags as nice as Mulberry date?

I know I am very lucky and am sorry I have written an essay, but I am just not sure what to do.

Btw, I have just bought a lovey pony skin bag (a bargain in TK Maxx) by Edina Ronay, so it isn't like I haven't got a nice one.

Help....

I myself love love bags and so I am not the best to advise but..have you considered going to the big designer outlet place not far out of NY. I don't know where exactly it is but I think that there is one with Chanel etc. Maybe you could have a look and then decide ?

Have you thought about buying antique jewellery at auctions? You could get a bargain and also something a little bit different.

Gold is expensive right now, so maybe not the best time to buy an investment. I think I'd be inclined to look around for something I love totally and would use frequently, be it jewellery or a bag.

it's only worth investing in jewellery if you're talking minimum a few £K and from certain brands, anything else you will not get a return on.
If you're talking about investment as in something you're going to love and wear for years then it could be either, am not sure I could spend £1,000 on a handbag though.....!

What about getting a custom piece made for you. Maybe the money would go further. You might not get a diamond but something that you have designed yourself? As for the outlet mall in NY I couldn't see the stores that are there as I am using my phone so couldn't see if Chanel is there

The jewellery is much cheaper in NY, just check the likes of Tiffany uk , vs USA for the difference in prices !

Thank you ladies.

When I say investment, I mean for me and not to sell on afterwards.

I have decided to go for jewellery. I cannot get excited about a bag however much I try.

I did have a quick look at Tiffanys whilst at work today, but it was the UK site. I will have a look at the US site later on tonight.

Warm, there is a guy locally that is a jewellery designer/fixer. I took my grandmas ring to him. He put a topaz stone in it and rebuilt the gold filigree work around the side where it holds the diamonds which go around the topaz, now we are talking about maybe 9 years ago now and he charged me for the work and the stone nearly £250. Am guessing this might be an expensive option to have something made...

If you have rather a lot of diamonds then go for a bag. It may not last as long but you will enjoy it more because it is different.

I'd buy a watch. Bags date, even nice Mulberry ones.

PS. I personally wouldn't buy Tiffany jewellery - you pay a huge markup for the brand/Audrey Hepburn image - and no one will know it's Tiffany unless you tell them
