simple wedding dress ideas

daisygatsby · 28/02/2012 16:01

im getting married (next year some time) and have never really thought about what id want for a dress. its going to be a small informal wedding.
im abt 5'3 and a hippy size 10 with generous norkage. something simple, wouldnt even have to be a 'wedding dress' , could just be a really nice dress. has to be long length though.
any ideas to inspire me?

Do you have a budget? Winter wedding or summer (or unsure)?

salamanda · 28/02/2012 16:10

My wedding dress was by BCBGMaxazria. I got it from Harvey Nicks for £310. It was long, cream, simple, REALLY gorgeous floaty material. Looked far nicer and better quality than the £1000 ones I tried on in bridal shops.

Stokey38 · 28/02/2012 16:12

J crew has some nice simple ones www.jcrew.com/wedding/Wedding_Bride.jsp

salamanda · 28/02/2012 16:13

Mine was basically this one but ivory and the bow was made of the same material as the dress, so not shiny (and I tied it at the back, which looked gorgeous in photos of us standing at the altar*)

A friend bought an Amanda Wakeley evening dress off the peg. It was perfect, so much so it's hard to imagine that the designer didn't have half an eye on the wedding dress market.

DilysPrice · 28/02/2012 16:19

It's obvious, but look at Monsoons range - classic, and good value.

And remember that it's normally far cheaper to get something off the peg that doesn't fit you perfectly and get it altered than it is to get something made specially.

There are also some great vintage-style brands out there (Vivian of Holloway etc) if you fancy that sort of look.

pastgrace - there will be a budget but i dont know what it is yet! i think id be opposed to spending too muc though. it will be winter or spring. no later than march
stokey - i like the 'mirabelle' one from j crew
salamanda - thats lovely, but i dont think strapless for me. ours will be at a lovely picturesque church* too

Ghost have some fab things - I always grumble about their website because you can't view the same style in multiple colours (you have to return to the main list, if that makes sense) but I like these styles

Phase Eight

daisygatsby · 28/02/2012 16:33

PastGrace · 28/02/2012 16:40

John Lewis have both Phase Eight ones (and more) on their website with some more sizes, if that helps you

daisygatsby · 28/02/2012 16:42

ooh great will look into that , thanks for pointing me in that direciton. have never looked at phase eight before

OP posts:
salamanda · 28/02/2012 16:45

ooh, I 2nd the phase 8 one, it's lovely and vintagey looking.

slug · 28/02/2012 16:51

I wore Ghost for my own wedding. They are not shiny satin, more of a textured effect. I like this one Go and check them out in the flesh.

daisygatsby · 28/02/2012 16:52

i do like that one slug, i had looked at it earlier

good for hiding hips and showing boobs!

enjoyingscience · 28/02/2012 17:06

Biba have some beautiful wedding dresses at House of Fraser - they are all very simple - not a meringue in sight.

MerryMarigold · 28/02/2012 17:06

Love the phase eight ones too, both of them gorgeous (though wouldn't describe as simple). I am a lace lover!

MerryMarigold · 28/02/2012 17:08

Ooh, those Biba ones are nice. I like this Biba one. And I'm sure it would actually look better on someone with boobs than that model.

daisygatsby · 28/02/2012 20:36

Merry - love that one. I guess when I say simple I mean not a big full skirt or train or too much bling. Definitely have an idea of my style now
